Xanadu Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Xanadu Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Margaret River, Western Australia   |    750ml   |    13.5%

2018 Jimmy Watson Trophy Winner

Xanadu Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has established itself as one of Margaret River's most consistent examples. The 2016 vintage of Xanadu Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was the awarded the 2018 Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy as the best one or two-year-old dry red wine at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show.

It also took out the trophy for the best cabernet, merlot or blend of associated varieties of the show. This is a generous full-bodied Margaret River Cabernet full of inky forest fruits, layered with blackcurrant pastilles and dark chocolate characters. The combination of the dense fruit characters and supple tannins linger through, delivering a red wine of the highest quality - a deserving winner of the Jimmy Watson Trophy.

Given its standing as Australia's most coveted wine award, this release from Xanadu has been highly anticipated and we expect our very limited stocks to sell out quickly.

"95 Points. The 2016 has a diagonal gold band with “The Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy”. Perfume, baking spice, mint, boysenberry, milk chocolate. Medium-bodied, perfume and dried herbs in a core of red and black fruit, open weave but fine grained tannin, fresh and bright, but with a good amount of bass. Finish is long and well-defined, the tannin lending confident grip as it goes down. Excellent. Tasted: Apr19 Alcohol: 14% Price: $39 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2019 - 2028+" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

John and Eithne Lagan arrived at Margaret River in 1968, first planting their vineyard in 1977. The Lagans planted the first vines in what is now one of the region’s oldest vineyards. Xanadu has a long history of producing wines of distinction and today stands as one of Margaret River's finest wineries.

GROWING CONDITIONS: Almost half of blend was Estate grown in the Wallcliffe sub-region of Margaret River. The remainder was predominantly sourced from two vineyards, in the more northern Margaret River subregions of Wilyabrup and Treeton. A small portion (9%) of Cabernet selected from a mature Geographe vineyard complemented the final blend.

WINEMAKING NOTES: Fruit was crushed/destemmed before predominantly small batch fermentation in a combination of static and open fermenters. Fermentation takes 7-8 days @ 24 – 26ᵒ C, during which the cap is managed using a combination of aerative pumping over as well as regular plunging by hand. After fermentation about a third of the components experienced a period of extended maceration, being left on skins for 4 weeks before a very gentle pressing. MLF takes place in a combination of tank and barrel. The wine was matured for 14 months in French oak (40% new barriques) before the blend was assembled and bottled.
