Woodlands came to fame early on with the release of our 1981 ‘Andrew’ Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine won trophies for ‘Best Red Wine’ at the Perth Wine Show, the Mt Barker Wine Show, and the National Wine Show. This wine was the first from Margaret River to achieve a National Red Wine Trophy.
Subsequent Cabernets made by David Watson won trophies and critical acclaim across the country.
The portions for this blend were harvested in late March before being sorted berry by berry on our vibrating sorting table. This process allows us to remove any leaves, stems, or green berries that can result in bitter or under ripe characters in the wine.
This wine is a blend of 52% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot, and 5% Malbec that has spent 10 months maturing in one, two and three year old French barrels.
Intense crimson in colour, the nose is bright and aromatic- showing an array of red berry fruits. The palate is playful and energetic, with lovely lifted primary Cabernet Franc characters of briar patch and raspberry combining with blackcurrant from the Merlot and a touch of white spice from the Malbec. The finish is fine, with bright acidity and vibrancy.
