Voyager Estate Girt By Sea Cabernet Merlot 2017

Margaret River, Western Australia   |    750ml   |    14%
Margaret River's Voyager Estate has firmly established themselves as one of Australia's leading exponents of Cabernet Sauvignon; their 'Girt by Sea' Cabernet Merlot regularly delivers high quality drinking at a very reasonable price.

This 2017 Voyager Estate Girt By Sea Cabernet Merlot is one of the more impressive releases we've tasted, delivering classic regional flavours of blackcurrant, dark cherry and milk chocolate on soft, well structured palate. Fans of Margaret River Cabernet will find plenty to enjoy about this release from Voyager Estate.

"93 Points. It's matured in all-French oak and while it's mostly cabernet and merlot there's a small portion of petit verdot in the mix. It's medium weight and fluid with blackcurrant, milk chocolate and gravel notes slipping amiably through. It has shape and texture but integrity of fruit is key here. No mucking about; this is a good cabernet to drink. $28.00. 14% alc. Drink By: 2030 Screwcap" - Campbell Mattinson,

Voyager Estate is located in the premium wine producing region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Latest statistics show that, although only producing 4% of Australia's wine by volume, Margaret River wines account for 23% of the country's premium wine production. Voyager Estate is proud to be among the select wineries that contribute to this production.

Voyager's oldest vines date back to 1978, just over 10 years after vines were first planted in the area. When current owner, Michael Wright, took over the property in 1991, he set out to expand it and develop a visitor destination that would be a showcase for the region. He also set out to ensure that, above all else, the quality of wine being made at Voyager Estate would always be the best that nature, expertise and pure hard work could provide.

Vintage: A cooler than average growing season commencing with perfect flowering and excellent fruit set. The resulting potentially high yields were crop-thinned pre-veraison. Late summer and autumn were cooler and wetter than average, delaying harvest some three weeks. The milder ripening weather allowed for excellent flavour concentration, fine tannins and well balanced acidity.

Method: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot parcels were destemmed but not crushed to preserve whole berries. Fermented in open or static fermenters with gentle hand plunging or pumpovers three times daily. Once pressed off skins, wines were matured in seasoned French oak with periodic racking to aid clarification. A parcel of Petit Verdot was blended to lift the aromatic profile.
