Ulithorne Frux Frugis Shiraz 15

Ulithorne Frux Frugis Shiraz 2015

McLaren Vale, South Australia   |    750ml   |    14.5%

We've been long admirers of Ulithorne of the McLaren Vale, believing it is one of the finest small producers in Australia. Each vintage they produce a superb example of McLaren Vale Shiraz under their ‘Frux Frugis’ label. ‘Frux Frugis’ is Latin for ‘fruit of the earth’ and is sourced from old vines from the finest parcels of Shiraz from Ulithorne's vineyards.

The 2015 Ulithorne Frux Frugis Shiraz is another brilliant example of McLaren Vale Shiraz. It shows plenty of star anise spice and ripe plums that are the signature of the old Ulithorne vineyard. Violets, dark summer berry perfume with supportive French oak contributes to the wines elegance, fragrance and structure. A long palate with fine structural tannins ensure long cellaring. Bottles are individually numbered and waxed by hand.

"97 Points. Old vines in a single vineyard with low yields. The bouquet makes me think of the River Styx, dark and impenetrable, the full-bodied palate's power and liquid intensity coming as a shock. No light feminine touch here, and why should there be. It is a remarkable wine of very high quality, piling on the flavour as its length extends inexorably. Bottle no. 3635. Cork. 14.5% alc. To 2040. $100"- James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2019.

"97/100. McLaren Vale Shiraz with some impressive pedigree that delivers on it’s reputation and the vintage. A brooding nose of blackberry, dark cherry and plum that’s softened by spiced vanillin oak. Layers of black fruits show themselves on the palate with milk chocolate and earthen leathery notes. Tannins are drying, firm and underwrite decades of development. A wine with classy winemaking and undeniably high quality fruit has resulted in a benchmark example of McLaren Vale Shiraz. Alc: 14.5"- Patrick Eckel, https://winereviewer.com.au.
