The Schultz family have owned the Turkey Flat vineyard since 1870, and are proud custodians of some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world (planted in 1847). Turkey Flat Shiraz comfortably sits among the top bracket of Barossa Valley Shiraz and still sells for a fraction of the price of many other highly regarded examples. The 2015 Turkey Flat Shiraz is another generous, intensely flavoured and impeccably structured Barossa Shiraz that is sure to appeal to the many fans of this wine.

"95 Points. If you’re looking for first class, traditionally styled, Barossa shiraz, this release from Turkey Flat is the perfect ‘go to’. It’s toasty, malty, beautifully blackberried and rich, the deliciousness factor from start to finish (very) high. To boot, it has both the inherent structure and balance to keep it at a high level for a good long time. This is Turkey Flat Shiraz in exactly the form you’d like to see it. Plum, kirsch, cream and cocoa characters are all nothing if not seductive. Licks of oak are perfectly applied. Fruit is dark and satisfying. Redcurrant and spice notes are there, but as bit players. "I have been a long-term fan of the Turkey Flat wines, from its Barossa Valley White (Marsanne/Viogner/Roussanne) through to the Butchers Block Red (Shiraz/Grenache/Mataro). The Shiraz is also awesome and is made from grapes grown on very, very old vines, it is oak fermented and given extraordinary TLC (tender loving care). The current release 2015 Turkey Flat Shiraz has a lovely depth of bright, vibrant purple colour, alluring aromas of plums and vanillin oak. On the palate it is big, rich and powerful yet smooth with delightful layers of flavour, great texture and a long, lingering finish. Deep crimson purple, this smells super with its aromas of briary dark fruits together with a little cedar/vanillin from the beautifully handled oak (the wine was matured in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads). Turkey Flat owns five vineyards spread over a radius of 20km from Bethany in the south, Ebenezer in the north, Stonewell in the west, with other vineyards in the east. They cover four very different sub-regions and give them the ability to blend the attributes of each subregion into their wines.

Turkey Flat firmly believe winemaking begins in the vineyard, as a result they spend a great deal of time managing vine vigour, controlling shoot growth as well as shoot and bunch thinning. This helps to reduce yields and open up the vines to let in the sunlight.

Turkey Flat are not industrial winemakers and try at all times to keep the winemaking process simple and traditional, to not interfere with the true expression of the vineyard.

The Turkey Flat Vineyard boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Planted in 1847, these hard-working gnarled old vines are still producing fantastic grapes. They are dry grown with their roots extending metres into the soil in search of moisture.

Much of the credit for the best Shiraz made in the Barossa is due to old vines such as these. The fact that these vines still exist is largely due to a far-sighted quarantine scheme, in which South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated the vineyards of Europe, America and subsequently parts of Australia in the late 1800’s.

This shiraz is a result of a very intricate blending process. After each parcel of fruit is individually vinified & aged in specially selected French oak barrels, the final blend is created with careful consideration to upholding its reputation for cellaring gracefully, retaining its freshness and balance for many years.

This year we were honoured with the Turkey Flat Shiraz receiving the Barossa Trust Mark. The Barossa Trust Mark is a mark of aspirational standard set by the Barossa region. It provides you with a guarantee and assurance of quality.

Generous, plush and rich on the palate, the 2015 over delivers in every quarter. Mark’s understated hand has crafted this wine from its beginnings in our 1847 Bethany vineyard, with select parcels from the Stonewell block to create a wine of presence, power and structure.
