Turkey Flat Butchers Block Red 2015

Turkey Flat Butchers Block Red 2016

Barossa Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    14.5%

94 Points - James Halliday

One of the Barossa Valley's finest wineries, Turkey Flat are currently in red hot form even by their lofty standards. Their 2016 Turkey Flat Grenache was a worthy recipient of the 2017 Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show, and the overall quality of their wines across the board has arguably never been higher.

This 2016 Turkey Flat Butchers Block Red is a classic Barossa blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre that offers the great drinkability and value for money this wine has become famous for.

"94 Points. A shiraz/grenache/mourvedre blend, part sourced from some of the oldest (1865) vines on the Turkey Flat vineyard. Excellent colour; a warm and spicy bouquet introduces a medium-bodied palate with red and black berries, plus good mouthfeel and length. Oak plays little or no part in framing the palate, fine tannins doing the trick. Drink By: 2030 Price: $21.00 Date Tasted: 11 Sep 2017 Alcohol: 14%" - James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au.

"Spicy aromatic bouquet, great on the palate- oodles of flavour, smooth & delicious with fine-grained tannins. Brilliant with food right now. DELIGHTFUL."- Dan Traucki, wineassist.com.au.

"...Beside (the 2016 Turkey Flat Grenache) sits another more homestead style Turkey Flat 2016 Butchers Block Red, which is the estate's variation within the GSM genre, here with a 49:38:13 split of shiraz, grenache and mataro. Savoury characters here exude spicy, smoky smallgood aromas to contrast with its crushed crimson berries that are however always cloaked in the varietal feed of sandy, grainy tannins and textures. A knockabout country red blend with a fair bit of bush character to boot." - Tony Love, SA Weekend Magazine October 28 2017.

Turkey Flat owns five vineyards spread over a radius of 20km from Bethany in the south, Ebenezer in the north, Stonewell in the west, with other vineyards in the east. They cover four very different sub-regions and give them the ability to blend the attributes of each subregion into their wines.

Turkey Flat firmly believe winemaking begins in the vineyard, as a result they spend a great deal of time managing vine vigour, controlling shoot growth as well as shoot and bunch thinning. This helps to reduce yields and open up the vines to let in the sunlight.

Turkey Flat are not industrial winemakers and try at all times to keep the winemaking process simple and traditional, to not interfere with the true expression of the vineyard.

"The Butchers Block is a traditional Barossa blend made with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro), with the proportions of each variety varying from vintage to vintage. Like medals at a children's sporting event, when we blend a wine we like each parcel to have recognition; its own chance to feel proud of its contribution to the team. Here, each varietal is vinified & aged individually in French oak barrels before the final blending process. Shiraz adds the generous mouthfeel, Grenache the spice and cherry-like sweetness and Mourvèdre the backbone, savoury edge and fragrance. Balance is crucial, each varietal's contribution is evident yet nothing competes for your attention." - Turkey Flat Wines.
