Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz

Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz 2016

Barossa Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    14.5%

95 Points | "Stunning Wine" - Nick Stock

Torbreck continues to take advantage of dry-grown, old vines to make some of the Barossa's most demanded wines. Like all Torbreck wines, Woodcutter's Shiraz is sourced from hand harvested and hand tended, low yielding vines. It is then open fermented and gently basket pressed, and aged on fine lees for 12 months in large format seasoned barrels and foudres.

Although Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz is consistently praised for being succulent and rich, perhaps its best feature is the complexity and texture that are rarely found at this price. The 2016 Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz is another great value example of Barossa Shiraz from the team at Torbreck.

"95 Points. This shows the greatness of the vintage with graphite, stone, oyster shell, blackberry, and licorice. Smoke undertone. Full body yet linear and energetic with a fabulous finish. A stunning wine. Great value for the quality. Drink now. Screw cap." - NIck Stock, jamessuckling.com.

David Powell started the iconic Torbreck in 1994 by offering to nurse back to health a number of neglected old vines he had found when he was working for Rockford.

This share-crop arrangement allowed Powell to make his first wine under the Torbreck label which was named after a forest in Scotland where he had worked as a lumberjack. The Torbreck wines are based on the classic Barossa varieties of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and also small quantities of Roussanne, Marsanne & Viognier.

Torbreck has an enviable collection of growers around the Barossa & Eden Valleys with vines aged from 10 years old (which would go into Woodcutters Shiraz) to 160 years old (Run Rig). The house style at Torbreck is a seamless balance of richness and finesse, the wines are always fresh and vibrant with underlying power and drive.

These are world class wines and a benchmark for the Barossa Valley.
