Tolpuddle Pinot Noir

Tolpuddle Pinot Noir 2018

Coal River Valley, Tasmania   |    750ml   |    13.5%
Tolpuddle Vineyard is an outstanding site within the Coal River Valley region of Southern Tasmania. Planted in 1988 solely to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, in 2011 the vineyard was acquired by Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW. This highly regarded duo have invested heavily in improving all aspects of the vineyard, in pursuit of their vision of making Tolpuddle one of Australia's great single vineyard sites.

The 2018 Tolpuddle Pinot Noir represents the seventh release of this wine, which has now firmly established itself among the top echelon of Australian Pinot Noir. Another complex, beautifully structured Tasmanian Pinot Noir that opens beautifully with time in the glass - this will further enhance the reputation of Tolpuddle.

"95 Points This is a very driven and complex red with dried-strawberry, tea, coffee and mahogany aromas and flavors. Full-bodied yet integrated and compact, giving the wine a refined and very structured impression. This is one to watch. Better after 2022, but already delicious."- James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, 28 June, 2019.

"94+ Points. This Pinot Noir release is marked in its spice and general savouriness but the oak seems to have been dialled down slightly on previous releases. It may just be the season. We get beet and black cherry, plum and twiggy spice, with gentle infusions of clove and woodsmoke. If it was a photograph it would be vivid with earth-like tones. Acid runs refreshingly through, keeping it lively, but there’s excellent flavour here in volume terms and an impressive strike of grainy tannin. It’s another tip-top release, without question. Tasted: Sep19 Alcohol: 13.5% $85 Screwcap Drink: 2021 - 2028+" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

"If ever a new winery was born with blue blood in its veins, Tolpuddle would have to be it." - James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2014

Tolpuddle Vineyard in the Coal River Valley region of Southern Tasmania was established in 1988; taking its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs; English convicts transported to Tasmania for forming an agricultural union.

Martin Shaw, Michael Hill Smith MW and Matthew Hill Smith purchased the vineyard in 2011 with a vision of making Tolpuddle one of Australia's great single vineyards. The vineyard is planted with mature vines, the cool and dry climate ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of exceptional quality.

Today Tolpuddle are producing some of Australia's leading examples of these Burgundian varieties. Made in very small quantities, the Tolpuddle Pinot Noir and Tolpuddle Chardonnay are highly sought after by lovers of premium Australian wine.

VINTAGE NOTES: Mild conditions in spring saw nicely balanced shoot development leading up to flowering. Then some warmer weather in early summer meant that the vines were tracking slightly ahead compared to average. Slow and even ripening then followed, with dry conditions resulting in excellent flavour concentration.

This wine is true to the Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir style: medium-bodied with savoury spice notes, along with purity of varietal expression, fresh acidity and ripe tannins.
