Tokar Estate Shiraz 2017

Yarra Valley, Victoria   |    750ml   |    13%

Trevor Mast Trophy (Best Shiraz) - 2018 Royal Melbourne Wine Show

Tokar Estate is undoubtedly one of the rising stars of the Yarra Valley and this winery continues to attract some high acclaim. Located in the prime Yarra location of Gruyere, Tokar Estate is surrounded by Oakridge, Yarra Yering and Coldstream Hills. All winemaking is overseen by Martin Siebert who has previously completed vintages at; Benjamin Leroux (Burgundy, France), Pegasus Bay (Canterbury, N.Z.), along with Yarra Yering, Coldstream Hills, Granite Hills and Carlei Estate.

This 2017 Tokar Estate Shiraz was recently awarded the Trevor Mast Trophy for Best Shiraz at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards. It was also runner up at the 2018 Jimmy Watson for the Best Young Red Wine Trophy at the same competition. A Yarra Valley Shiraz "inspired more by Northern Rhone than Barossa", this is a wine of rare structure and fruit intensity. The palate has both volume and length; the abundance of fruit flavours are coated in spice with as juicy raspberries intermingle with cedar, myrtle and soft, subtle tannins on the finish. An exceptional cool-climate Shiraz that is deserving of the accolades it's already received.

Review of the 2016 vintage included below;

"96 Points. From estate vines planted in '96, hand-picked, foot-stomped to leave 50% whole bunches, wild-fermented, matured in French oak. An exceptionally intense wine with great length born of that intensity. Maybe the fruit taken for the Rose was selectively picked bunch by bunch, not row by row. French and American oak has joined with firm tannins to provide some of the texture and structure of this remarkable wine. Price when Tasted: $35.00 Date when Tasted: 24 Feb 2018 Alcohol: 14.7 % Drink By: 2046 Closure: Screwcap" - James Halliday,
Trevor Mast Trophy Winner 2018

Tokar Estate is a family founded and operated winery and vineyard. It has a Yarra Valley dress circle location in Gruyere, on Maddens Lane, between Oakridge, Yarra Yering and Coldstream Hills. Tokar Estate has had immense success on the wine show circuit and has been rated 5 Red stars for three consecutive years by James Halliday.

Tokar Estate's winemaker Martin Siebert has previously completed vintages at; Benjamin Leroux (Burgundy, France), Pegasus Bay (Canterbury, N.Z.), Yarra Yering (Yarra Valley), Coldstream Hills (Yarra Valley), Granite Hills (Macedon Ranges) and Carlei Estate (Port Phillip).

“Burgundy in particular taught me a huge amount about the importance of the vineyard site and how the wines should speak of where they were grown. Great wines can only be made from great sites so I was delighted to jump on board with Tokar Estate, as I knew the site was bursting with potential.”
Yarra Valley
Vineyard: Our four acre Shiraz block was planted in 1997 and now that the vines are mature and deep rooted, they are remarkably vigorous, requiring a lot of work to keep them under control. The results of this work make it worth it as they deliver wonderfully concentrated fruit full of raspberry and pepper with a mineral edge. The vines are spur pruned on VSP trellis and planted in grey clay soil dotted with ironstone and mudstone pebbles. Perhaps these stones contribute to the mineral notes in our Shiraz.

Winemaking: Our Shiraz block was hand picked in late February and much of the fruit was foot stomped to release the juice from the bunches (this wine is a large portion whole bunch fermented) before undergoing fermentation with wild yeasts. The warm spice aromas of the ferment were deliciously intoxicating! A short post-ferment maceration soaked the tannins from the skins and stalks before pressing off to barrel (French oak). A slow, wild malolactic fermentation over the cold winter followed and the wine was then prepared for bottling whilst still vibrant. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
