Tim Adams Aberfeldy Shiraz 2013

Tim Adams Aberfeldy Shiraz 2014

Clare Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    14.5%
Produced largely from the 100-year-old Shiraz vines of the Clare vineyard of the same name, Aberfeldy Shiraz is Tim Adams' flagship wine. Sometimes referred to as "Clare Valley's Grange" this is widely regarded as a benchmark for the best Clare Valley Shiraz has to offer.

The 2014 Tim Adams Aberfeldy is again in superb form displaying great depth and length of flavour. The palate is full bodied with dark berry conserve flavours, balanced oak and firm tannin generated from a dry, low yielding vintage. The wine has persistent length of sweet fruit and oak, with power, elegance and great finesse.

"94/100. Aberfeldy epitomises Tim Adams’ skill in uniting vibrancy, definition and lift with depth and character. There is crunch and tang here, softened and deepened over a full two years in American oak hogsheads, making for a style that plays satsuma plum and black cherry fruit in full voice against a backdrop of spice, even a hint of dark Christmas cake. 14.5%"- Tyson Stelzer, WBM.

"They dare to call this the Clare Valley Grange. It’s the firm’s flagship wine, a consistent gold medal winner at the International Wine Challenge in London. It has a full-bodied palate with enticing dark berry conserve flavours, and persistent length. Also teams well with sausages and gravy. Made by Tim Adams and Brett Schutz, who recommend decanting an hour or two before quaffing"- Des Houghton, Courier Mail, August 2018.

Owner and winemaker, Tim Adams, began his career in the wine industry as a cellarhand at the Stanley Wine Company in 1975, steadily working his way through the ranks to become winemaker in 1981 following graduation. The first inclination to leave came in 1985, when Tim and his wife were approached by local cooper Bill Wray to form a partnership of the two families to make wine and small oak casks.

The first wines under the Adams & Wray label were released in September 1986, by which time Tim had left the Stanley Wine Company. In May 1987 the Adams & Wray partnership was dissolved, and Tim and his wife Pam took full control of the renamed Tim Adams Wines. In late 1987 they purchased the existing winery site and opened the cellar door in January 1988.

Growing Conditions: The growing season in the lead up to the 2014 vintage in the Clare Valley saw average autumn and winter rainfall. Spring was relatively dry but the ample subsoil moisture from winter and a mild spring provided excellent budburst and flowering conditions. February was cooler than average, allowing acid levels in the grapes to increase whilst slowing sugar development, resulting in excellent flavour profiles. The mild conditions continued through March, providing ideal, even tannin and flavour development in the reds.

"Flavour profiles, natural acidity, colour and tannin in the 2014 reds looked fantastic from an early stage”, said winemaker Brett Schutz. He continued, “we hand selected the best Shiraz blocks of the vintage and allowed them to ripen to perfect maturity before harvesting”.

Food Pairing: The Aberfeldy is best enjoyed with a range of red meat-based dishes with complementary sauces/gravies.
