Teusner The Riebke Shiraz 2018

Barossa Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    14.5%
Over the past few years Teusner The Riebke Shiraz has won the praise of both the wine press and wine drinkers for over-delivering on quality at an unbeatable price. The name is tribute to the Riebke brothers who have some of the best kept vineyards in the Ebenezer district, and whose family have grown outstanding quality fruit from old, low yielding vines for six successive generations.

The 2018 Teusner The Riebke Shiraz is another jam-packed Barossa Shiraz bursting with all the usual flavours: plums, black fruits and warm spices. Another superb Shiraz from the team at Teusner that offers sensational value drinking.

"Teusner’s Riebke Shiraz is 10% grenache. It’s red berried, sweet, generous and soft. Red licorice territory, just tipping into kirsch. A mouthful of fruit flavour, you could say. Rated: 91 Points Tasted: Dec19 14.5% alc. $27 Screwcap Drink: 2019 - 2024+" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

Winemaker Kym Teusner is one of the Barossa’s young Turks - but with a twist. While many of his generation are making massively rich and ripe reds - often at very high prices - Teusner has aimed to balance the natural power of old vine Barossa material with careful, reductive winemaking that produces wines of wonderful elegance and complexity.

His wines are about as close as the Barossa gets to reminding the drinker of the Southern Rhone, and their value for money is quite astounding. Teusner Wines came into being late in 2001 when Kym Teusner, then at Torbreck, witnessed a conversation between his wife’s uncle and his brother. They were discussing the viability of an old Grenache vineyard, planted in the Northern Barossa Valley by their grandfather. The low yields and low prices being paid by the ‘big boys’ meant the vineyard was running at a loss and facing certain destruction. Kym was loath to hear this and approached his brother-in-law, now business partner, Michael Page, to see if they could scratch together enough cash to keep these gnarled old vines in the ground.

In that first year, they raised enough capital for about a quarter of the fruit from that vineyard, but this was enough for the Riebke brothers to stall their plans for these precious old vines. They were aware of a few other old blocks from which fruit could be sourced, if required, and made their first release with 165 cases of 2002 Joshua. In addition to this, about eight hogsheads of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz were put aside, destined to be released around 24 months later as Avatar. From here the selection of wines have expanded significantly.

“The Riebke family grow outstanding quality fruit on old, low yielding Barossa Valley vines…something they’ve been doing for six generations. For their faith in what we do and their assistance in the birth and growth of Teusner Wines, we’ll be forever thankful.

The Riebke tradition continues…rich, abundant flavour and serious drinkability whilst also being easy on the pocket. The wine is jam packed with Barossa Shiraz flavours….plums, black fruits and warm spices. We’ve taken it easy on the oak to allow the fruit to take center stage…as you would when it’s this good. This is a plush, vibrant wine of immense generosity and incredible value.

Thanks again to mother nature and the amazing Riebke family!”- KYM TEUSNER, WINEMAKER
