Stoney Rise Pinot Noir 2018

Tamar Valley, Tasmania   |    750ml   |    12.5%

Stoney Rise is owned and operated by Joe and Lou Holyman who are building a reputation for making some of Tasmania's finest examples of Pinot Noir.

This 2018 Stoney Rise Pinot Noir is another superb Pinot Noir made from a combination of Estate grown grapes along with those purchased from small growers throughout the Tamar Valley. A release with poise and structure, this offers plenty of appeal now however should develop further complexity over the coming years.

"95 Points. There's no doubting the variety nor the place (Tasmania's Tamar Valley), but this has an uncommon elegance and finesse to its light to medium-bodied palate. Its length and balance are first class Freshness is another major virtue. $29.00 Date when tasted 18 Sep 2019 12.5% alc. Drink By: 2030 Screwcap" - James Halliday, Top 100 Wines of 2019.

"94 Points. This is a very strong release for Stoney Rise. Joe is back on top in 2018. Fresh cherry, strawberry, spice and aniseed, a bit of the old stone and graphite thing happening too. It’s cool and clear in fruit, fine dry tannin, a quiet succulence, yet keeps itself nice and trim with cranberry acidity crunch. It’s pretty long too, and in fact, the finish is particularly impressive, crisp and insistently tannic. Finesse combined with high drinking appeal. Tasted: Sep19 Alcohol: 12.5% Price: $32. Screwcap Drink: 2020 - 2026+"- Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

The Stoney Rise Wine Company is a boutique vineyard and cellar door based in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley. It is the brainchild of Joe Holyman and his wife Lou.

Stoney Rise was established in 2000 with an eye to produce wines that are food friendly, and offer people complex wines without too much oak, or overripe fruit characters. The name comes from a surf break in the Little Dip Conservation Park behind Robe in South Australia.
Tamar Valley
This 2018 Pinot Noir goes back to the styles of the 2015 and 2016. There is more obvious upfront fruit on the nose, with hints of pomegranate and bright red cherries. The palate is soft and luscious upfront, but then the dollop of old vine fruit takes over and you are left with a hint of tannin, some complementing acidity and a long finish. Whilst it is upfront and easy drinking, the 2018 with its poise and structure will reward with some time in the cellar. This is Joe's favourite Stoney Rise since 2015.

Our 2018 Stoney Rise Pinot Noir is a 60/40 blend of fruit we grow and fruit we purchase from our small growers around the Tamar Valley. The 60% from our vineyard comprises of just over half of the fruit from vines planted in 2004 and for the first time in 2018 there is a small percentage of fruit from our new 2014 plantings. The remainder comes from our older vines planted in 1986 - which is the component of the blend that gives this wine it's structure and backbone.
