Spinifex Garcon Grenache

Spinifex Garcon Grenache 2018

Barossa Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    13.5%

The 2018 Spinifex 'Garcon' represents the third release of this old-vine Barossa Grenache from Spinifex. Intended to be a "celebration of this variety from its spiritual home in Australia", some of the source vineyards are over 100-years-old; representing Australian wine history in a bottle.

One of the most impressive examples of Barossa Grenache we've tasted in some time, the 2018 Spinifex Garcon Grenache is delicate and aromatic with plenty of ripe raspberry, cherry, redcurrant notes on the nose. The youthful, vibrant palate is brimming with redcurrant, rhubarb and plum flavours that provide plenty of drink-now pleasure in its youth.

Available for the one-week only price of $24.90 a bottle, this is a high quality, old-vine Barossa Grenache that has already received plenty of well-deserved praise.

"96 Points. A tour de force by Spinifex, holding the alcohol down yet taking its own stance with an array of totally supple and generous spices threaded through the red fruits at the heart of the palate, SWALK by fine tannins. $28. 13.5% alc.
Drink By: 2028 Screwcap" - James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au.

"94 Points. Meaty, umami, dried mint, mixed berries. Feels very natural and unforced, sour cherry and red berries, smooth silty tannin, earthy too, almost like a Morgon, but don’t mind me! Slick of tannin, like graphite, with dried herb, sausage and ripe red fruit to close. Bloody lovely. Mineral. So well made. Tasted: Jul-19 13.5% alc. $36 Screwcap Drink: 2019 - 2028" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

Spinifex of the Barossa Valley is one of the most impressive 'new comers' of Australian wine. Established in 2001, Spinifex is still very much viewed as 'a new kid on the block' given the long history of many of its Barossa counterparts.

Spinifex is the project of New Zealand-born Peter Schell, a Roseworthy graduate who had spent several vintages working in the south of France prior to establishing Spinifex. Given his time working in southern France, a focus on Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Cinsault was hardly surprising.

2018 is the third release of Garcon, a pure Grenache from old vine vineyards in the Barossa Valley, and is our celebration of the this variety from its spiritual home in Australia.

The three vineyards that provided the fruit for Garcon are located in the extreme west (Moppa), north (Ebeneezer) and east (Bethany) of the Barossa and are 55, 90 and 85 years of age respectively. All are unirrigated and hand picked.

Bright, deep ruby, blue-hued High toned, mineral edged red and blue fruits lead to a savoury aromatic core of dried herbs, game and potters clay. Pure but with a restrained rusticity. Youthful, mid-weight palate, bright spiced red cherry and ripe raspberry fruits turn to a slatey, dried spice and cherry pit close. Precise and focussed, fine sandy tannins and bright acids deliver drive and finish.
