SC Pannell is considered one of South Australia's finest red wine producers, with his Adelaide Hills Syrah produced from a vineyard in Echunga, 410 metres above sea level. Steve Pannell has worked with this vineyard since 2010 with some spectacular results; most notably collecting the 2014 Jimmy Watson Trophy with the 2013 vintage of this wine.

The 2016 SC Pannell Adelaide Hills Syrah is perfumed, vibrant and complex with prominent blackforest fruits, tapenade, all spice and dark cocoa powder notes. A typically approachable rendition of Adelaide Hills Shiraz, this has a subtle power and intensity that slowly unfurls; revealing the density that carries the palate further. Incredibly balanced and poised, this is another exceptional release from SC Pannell.

Stephen Pannell marked 10 years of the S.C. Pannell label in style, buying a vineyard he’s loved for years, acquiring a winery and cellar door in the heart of McLaren Vale and scooping the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for his 2013 Adelaide Hills Syrah.

He grew up in the wine industry as a member of the family that founded Moss Wood in 1967 and has garnered unparalleled experience over the years from many of Australia’s best wineries, including Wirra Wirra and Hardys, where he was Chief Red Winemaker from 1999 to 2003.

He’s worked numerous vintages overseas with the likes of Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Burgundy, Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and G.D. Vajra in Barolo. Other highlights include landing the title of IWC International Red Winemaker of the Year in London, snaring the Jimmy Watson in 1996 and twice winning the Max Schubert Trophy at the Adelaide Wine Show, as well as being listed as one of the 50 most influential contributors to the world of wine by Decanter magazine.

Wines like his Tempranillo Touriga and Grenache Shiraz Touriga are as gastronomically astute as they are downright delicious. Grenache, Stephen’s ‘warm-climate Pinot’, goes from strength to strength, while the Nebbiolo has quickly become one of Australia's most sought-after examples.

Adelaide Hills
Sourced from a vineyard in Echunga, 410 metres above sea level and just down the road from the first vineyard planted in South Australia. Steve has worked with this vineyard now since 2010 and in 2014 won him the Jimmy Watson for the 2013 vintage. The fruit is grown on well-drained, granitic soil, Steve’s preference for Syrah. A Syrah instead of the traditional Shiraz to stop confusion and pay homage to the cool climate style made in the Northern Rhone Valley of France, where it is thought to have originated. This vintage is naturally riper and as with all 2016’s, more tannic.

The Vintage: The 2016 vintage was a vintage of two distinct halves. Winter & Spring were exceptionally dry & warm, with irrigation beginning earlier than Steve can ever recall. To answer his concerns, a number of rainstorms quickly changed everything, making 2016 one of the wettest and mildest ripening periods. These cool, wet conditions saved our vines. All of the red wines from 2016 are tannic and not dissimilar to 1996 and 2006 where the heat toughened up the skins, this should make the wines long lived.

Vineyard: Echunga, Adelaide Hills

Process Hand-harvested and vinified in small open-top fermenters with 30% whole bunches. A total of 17 days on skins before being sent to predominately old, large, French-oak vats for 10 months.
