Granite Hills Riesling

Granite Hills Riesling 2018

Macedon Ranges, Victoria   |    750ml   |    13%
Perched atop the spectacular boulder strewn slopes of the Great Dividing Range, midway between Mt Macedon and Heathcote, the Granite Hills vineyard lies at the interface of climates. Essentially cool due to an altitude of 550 metres, but with a warm and dry influence from central Victoria.

The 2018 Granite Hills Riesling is the 43rd consecutive vintage of what is widely recognised as one of Australia's finest Rieslings; this again is an intensely flavoured and beautifully structured cool-climate Riesling.

Review of the 2017 vintage included below;

"96 Points. Granite Hills are an icon of the Macedon Ranges who are particularly well known for their Riesling which is produced from 45 year old vines planted at an elevation of over 550 metres. Cool climate viticulture at it’s finest. The wine gives has a light yellow hue in the glass with a nose of citrus blossom, lime and musk aromatics that are backed by wet slate and the faintest touch of fennel. A piercingly pure wine that has a delicacy of citrus fruits that is matched by a fine tapestry of acidity that gives wonderful contrast and impressive length. There is a honey and spice note that adds some richness to citrus fruits on the mid to back palate. A wine that is immediately approachable now, but will last for decades. Optimal Drinking: 2018 - 2032 Date Reviewed: 04 25, 2018" - Patrick Eckel,

With a reliable rainfall, freely drained soils and low disease pressure, it’s no mystery that this Estate is home to some very special wines, including one of Australia’s benchmark Rieslings as well as being heralded as the birthplace of peppery Shiraz. In fact, since the first plantings in 1970, Granite Hills has forged an enviable reputation as one of the countries most prized small family wineries by winning more than 400 awards from local and international shows.

Now approaching 40 years of pioneering Cool climate wines, the Knight family and dedicated staff, continue their pursuit through attentive vineyard management including hand pruning, hand picking and low yields, followed by an astute mix of modern and traditional winemaking techniques, to create wines with distinctive varietal and regional expression.
Macedon Ranges
The stony granite soils, high altitude and cool night temperatures impress the fruit of these 47 year-old Riesling vines with a special refinement and persistence of flavour.

These qualities are nurtured through hand harvesting and gentle winemaking techniques to mold a style renowned for its definitive varietal expression, fine natural acidity and the ability to age, gaining even greater complexity with time.
