Tim Shand heads a dynamic, progressive young winemaking team at this James Halliday five star-rated winery. Punt Road is a standard-bearer for wines of character, drinkability and a clear, proud Yarra Valley stamp. It has history on its side and cards stacked in its favour for a very bright future. The property was founded on site of the St. Huberts Vineyard planted in the 1860's by Paul and Hubert de Castella - some of the first vines in the Yarra Valley and one of the cornerstones of Australian fine-wine tradition.
Punt Road owners the Napoleone family took advantage of a tremendous head start when they planted vineyards here in the 1980's. All these years later, Tim and the team bring restless perfectionism to this intimately understood site and its mature vines. The Punt Road wines have never been better.
Grown on Block 3 on the Napoleone Vineyard in Coldstream on alluvial clay loam soil with a northwest aspect. SA125 clone, planted in 1987 and harvested in mid-March 2017. 100% destemmed, 10% drain off, cold soak for four days. Fermented with FX10 yeast to a maximum temperature of 25°C, pressed at zero baumé. Malolactic conversion and maturation in French barriques (25% new). Coopers were Taransaud, Saury and Nadalie. Small amounts of Petit Verdot and Merlot added. No finings, minimal filtration. Blended in June 2018, bottled in July 2018.
This is our most elegant, restrained release to date, a product of a mild and prolonged season. Jaffas and redskins on the nose, with a hint of bay leaf. The palate is savoury, but fresh and bright. Redskins again, set upon a core of blackcurrant fruit and melting tannins- Tim Shand, Punt Road
