Port Phillip Sauvignon 2018

Port Phillip Estate Sauvignon 2018

Mornington Peninsula, Victoria   |    750ml   |    13%
Port Phillip Estate is regarded as one of Victoria's leading producers of Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes for this 2018 Port Phillip Estate Sauvignon were gently whole-bunch pressed into old French oak barriques, where fermentation occurred spontaneously with ambient yeasts. Once dry, the wine was left on lees for several months prior to bottling. The wine was bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.

The result is a vibrant and complex example of Mornington Peninsula Sauvignon Blanc; fruitier notes of pawpaw, guava and grapefruit combine together with the usual herbaceous characters of Sauvignon Blanc (jalapeño and dill) to deliver an intensely aromatic bouquet. The palate shows hints of texture from the barrel fermentation and ageing but is driven by fine acidity and finishes with a passionfruit skin pithiness.

"94 Points. This has been on an excellent run of form and it continues here. It’s all about power, and texture. Once you have the power, you build the texture. Tropical fruit, passionfruit, guava, lemongrass, even grapefruit; all such flavours blink through the palate. It also has a gravelly, smoky edge, which is entirely a positive. This wine saw some old wood, and it did it some good. Excellent white wine. Tasted: Dec18 Alcohol: 14% Price: $27 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2018 - 2021" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

Following a wet Winter, budburst commenced relatively late in mid September. The Winter rainfall set up the vineyards well for Spring with overall temperatures during Spring slightly higher than average accompanied by below average rainfall. Flowering commenced mid late November with ideal weather conditions, resulting in one of the best fruit sets in many years. The mild to warm conditions continued throughout Summer and veraison commenced in mid January. Harvest delivered fruitful crop loads matched with very stable weather conditions, ensuring vine performance and good ripeness. Picking commenced late February and the viticultural team worked steadily until the beginning of April delivering outstanding fruit. The white wines display excellent acidity, depth and intense fruit flavours. The red wines look poised and elegant with powerful aromatics and a great balance between tannin and acid.

The Vineyard: The Port Phillip Estate Sauvignon is a single site wine produced from 0.65 hectares of estate vineyard. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and fermented without yeast inoculation in old French oak barriques. Once dry, the wine was left sur lie for several months prior to bottling. The wine was bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.
