Poonawatta Estate, the cornerstone of which is The 1880 Shiraz, produced from 8 of a hectare (two acres) of original vines planted in 1880. To the best of their knowledge the 7th oldest Shiraz vineyard in Australia, and the 2nd oldest in Eden Valley after Henschke’s Hill of Grace. This small vineyard consisting of 912 weathered vines produces low yields of premium fruit for their flagship wine. With around 2000 bottles produced each vintage.
The nose is fresh and vibrant, with lifted citrus and floral notes, underpinned by a bouquet of lime, apple and hints of wild herb. The palate is lively and intense, with mouth filling zesty lime and mineral flavours supported by vibrant and balanced acidity, running through to a long and lingering sherbet lime finish.
Only free run juice was used in the making of The Eden 2016 Riesling, to capture the purity of the variety. The Eden displays classic regionality and excellence that Eden Valley is renowned for.
