PHI Wines Syrah Grenache Mourvedre

PHI Syrah Grenache Mourvedre 2013

Heathcote, Victoria   |    750ml   |    14%
The Phi wines are a project of two well-known wine families; De Bortoli and the Shelmerdine family. Under the skilled winemaking of Steven Webber, the Phi wines are handled with meticulous care to reflect the truly unique nature of each vineyard.

We've been fans of the PHI wines for a long time however their Syrah Grenache Mourvedre from Heathcote is a relatively new discovery for us. The 2013 vintage is a perfumed, approachable red with dark cherry, rhubarb and subtle liquorice notes. Offering good intensity of flavour, savoury undertones and soft dusty tannins, this is a Heathcote red full of personality that delivers great drinking at this price.

Derived from the 21st letter of the ancient Greek alphabet, PHI symbolises perfect balance and harmony. These are virtues both the Shelmerdine and De Bortoli families value highly in wine. Together their philosophy is simple - to gently nurture wines while maintaining the character of the vineyard.

PHI brings together two diverse but complementary wine partners.

The Shelmerdine family has vast viticultural experience in central and southern Victoria and for the past thirty five years has committed to identifying and developing distinctive vineyard sites. Equally, the De Bortoli family, with its long history of winemaking, has a strong understanding of what a "sense of place" can bring to wine.

Together they are proud to present wines that are a true reflection of a unique vineyard.
Philosophy: Our first release of a Syrah Grenache blend from the Shelmerdine Family ‘Willoughby’ Vineyard was very successful. This blend of Syrah Grenache with a touch of Mourvédre is expressive of the unique conditions of this same vineyard within a region that lends itself very well to these ‘Southern Rhone’ varieties.

Vinification: Small batches of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvédre are vinified from the Shelmerdine Willoughby vineyard in northern Heathcote. Interesting soil profiles with deep red Cambrian volcanic soil mottled with limestone. Each produces unique flavours that are finely textured, have good perfume. It was a cracking season for Grenache.
