Ocean Eight Pinot Gris

Ocean Eight Pinot Gris 2019

Mornington Peninsula, Victoria   |    750ml   |    13.5%
Ocean Eight on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula has entrenched itself in the top echelon of Australian Pinot Gris makers with a string a brilliant recent releases. The 2019 Ocean Eight Pinot Noir is another classy example; beautifully aromatic with plenty of delicate citrus and floral perfume on the nose.

The texture is the key to this wine which was largely derived from ageing in French oak; which provides a nice contrast to the delicate aromas on the nose. It finishes dry and lingers with plenty of crisp acid.

"2019 Pinot Gris is a lovely display of the Ocean Eight style, lean, bright & tight with acid at the finish. The palate shows balance between some fresh citrus intensity of tangerines and some ripe pears. A little ginger from the extended time on yeast lees complements the fruit nicely. Crisp acid finish is in evidence, and with time the wine should develop some oily texture associated with barrel made Pinot Gris."- Ocean Eight Wines.

Ocean Eight is owned by the Aylward family who have been located in Shoreham on the Mornington Peninsula since 1994. In 1996 a site was carefully selected and planting commenced. A large winery was constructed where the fruit would be processed by hand and made into high quality wine. This vineyard was named ‘Kooyong'. In 2004 Kooyong was sold to the owners of Port Phillip Estate.

Chris, Gail and their son Mike wanted to remain in the wine business and planned on creating a new wine brand. The name 'Ocean Eight' was chosen as the Winery is located 8km from the beach at Shoreham.

While an optimal vineyard site was being researched to produce high quality fruit, the Aylwards converted a stable yard at their property in Shoreham into a small gravity fed winery. All the detail was included to ensure top quality wines could be achieved. All Ocean Eight's wines are made in small quantities/batches to ensure high quality and a focused style. The Pinot Gris grapes were picked ripe and the fermentation took place in old used barrels. The intention is to highlight the richness of the variety yet keep the wine dry at the finish.

Lean, bright & tight, the palate shows balance between fresh citrus intensity with a touch of melon and hint of ginger complimenting the fruit.

A clean and crisp acid finish, the wine will develop a nice oily mouthfeel with longer time in bottle. This wine is ageing very nicely and will keep for 4-7 years for optimal drinking potential.
