Mount Mary Reflexion Cabernet Franc

Mount Mary Réflexion Cabernet Franc 2017

Yarra Valley, Victoria   |    750ml   |    13.5%
Mount Mary's Réflexion wines are made entirely from Mount Mary estate grown fruit, primarily from their youngest plantings. The fruit grown on these vines is still developing towards the quality and consistency demanded for Mount Mary Vineyard estate wines, however when produced deliver high quality wines of enormous appeal.

This 2017 Mount Mary Réflexion Cabernet Franc is from a small block Mount Mary planted in 2008 on rootstock. This was a batch destined for Mount Mary's flagship Quintet, however at blending time the decision was made that "it didn't stylistically fit with the '17 blend" for Quintet, and thus the decision was made to bottle it under the Réflexion label. The result is a beautifully vibrant and fresh Yarra Cabernet with plenty of underlying complexity - ideal for enjoying in the short to medium-term.

"95 Points. Black jellybean, menthol, hedgerow, blackcurrant and raspberry. Medium-bodied, juicy burst but with black olive and pencil/earth savouries, buoyant, fresh, complex, dusty emery tannin, and a long and briary finish. Such a great drink. 94 or 95 points. Tasted : Apr-19 Alcohol: 13% Price: $51 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2019 - 2028" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

Mount Mary has long been considered one of Australia's most iconic wineries, with a history dating back to the early 1970's when Dr John Middleton established this iconic Yarra Valley winery.

Sam Middleton, the grandson of founder Dr John Middleton is now making the wines at Mount Mary and has clearly risen to the sizeable challenge of taking over this hallowed Yarra Valley winery, with superb quality across their Quintet Cabernets, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Triolet releases.

The Cabernet Franc is from a small block we planted in 2008 on rootstock. For for all intents and purposes this was a batch destined for Quintet, as per the norm. We didn't decide to leave it out until blending time, when we felt it didn't stylistically fit with the '17 blend. We loved it as a standalone wine, and looking at it in isolation we thought it would be a great fit for the Réflexion label!

This pretty, fresh style is achieved with 100% destemmed fruit but with as many whole berries as possible in ferment. This wine saw 16 months in oak (10% new). It has a very small portion of Merlot in it - about 5% - to fatten out the mid-palate ever so slightly.

The result is a crunchy wine with lively acidity and great freshness. It doesn't necessarily need time in bottle; as with all Réflexion wines, it's ready to drink on release! - Sam Middleton, Mount Mary
