Leeuwin Prelude Chardonnay 2016

Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay 2017

Margaret River, Western Australia   |    750ml   |    13.5%
Few would argue Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay stands as one of Australia's finest examples of Chardonnay and possibly our best white wine. Whilst it would be unfair to compare the "entry-level" Leeuwin Prelude Chardonnay to the 'Art Series', when it comes to value for money, Leeuwin Estate's Prelude Chardonnay has few peers. The 2017 Leeuwin Prelude Chardonnay again delivers a top class Margaret River Chardonnay with the purity, finesse and length of flavour we've come to expect from Leeuwin Estate.

"94 Points. The Leeuwin Estate Art Series is the Chardonnay boss, but if it's price tag is well out of reach, you lose little with a bottle of this under your wing. Simply, it's a gorgeous example of Margaret River Chardonnay. Seeing French oak for nine months, forty percent of which was new, you get the sense this was treated as kindly as it's more famous sibling. Aromas of barley sugar, peach skin and citrus spill from the glass. Moving seamlessly to the palate, they're joined by brioche and toast, vanilla from the oak and generous squeeze of lemon juice. A touch of nuttiness and a lick of almond meal too, it's hard to resist temptation as I move for a re-pour. Superb drinking for the money. Drink now but it will evolve beautifully for eight years." -Steve Leszczynski, QWine.

"Invariably a good wine to drink. This is as clean, fresh and straightforward as I can recall a Prelude Chardonnay to be. It’s juicy with pear and sun-ripened peaches and at every turn it drips with flavour. There’s a rub of creamy/cedary oak, and a welcome one, but fruit it is the main message here. Like it. Rated: 91 Points Tasted: Feb19 Alcohol: 13.5% Price: $34 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2019 - 2024" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

Leeuwin Estate is one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district.

In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan who founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. The initial vineyards were planted by hand over a five year period from 1975.

Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay in an international blind tasting.

Maintaining a team of highly skilled and dedicated winemakers, Leeuwin Estate is now under the direction of two generations of the founding family.

Tasting Notes: Lifted and fragrant with an abundance of limes, Nashi pears, white peaches and baby pineapples. Heightened with notes of jasmine, frangipani and lemon blossom. Nuances of nougat, cashew and toasted almonds combine with brioche, brulee and mealy notes lying beneath. The palate is bright, well weighted with volume and presence, whilst maintaining focus and definition. Pink grapefruit, white nectarine and baked apple feature with diligent oak and subtle texture. The layered and contoured mid palate is finely checked with mineral acid thread.

Vinification: Cool crushed fruit with some skin contact. The juice was settled for 3 days, racked, and underwent fermentation both with inoculated yeast and naturally. 100% of the juice was barrel fermented in French Coopered barriques, with 40% being new and the lees stirred regularly. After 9 months in barrels, individual parcels were blended, fined, cold stabilised and bottled.
