Harewood Porongorup Riesling 2018

Harewood Porongurup Riesling 2018

Great Southern, Western Australia   |    750ml   |    12.5%

Established in 1988 in Denmark, Western Australia, Harewood Estate was purchased by former Howard Park winemaker, James Kellie in 2003. We've been hugely impressed with some of the Harewood Estate white wines in recent times with the Rieslings always among the standouts.

This 2018 Harewood Porongurup Riesling has typically fine floral and citrus notes enhanced by an underlying flinty vibrancy. The palate is supremely elegant with initial flavours of green apple and grapefruit leading to a crisp mid-palate with an underlying slate character finishing with classic mouth-watering lemons and limes. An exceptional Riesling that underlines why many regard Great Southern as Australia's leading premium Riesling region.

"97 Points. Brings apple blossom to join citrus on the welcome mat, the palate responding in true Porongurup fashion with delicacy and intensity co-existing on the mirror walls of the scintillating palate, length its ultimate triumph. The fruit and its maker should both take a bow. Screwcap. 12.5% alc. To 2033. $24"- James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2020.

Established in 1988 in Denmark, Western Australia, Harewood Estate was bought by ex-Howard Park winemaker, James Kellie, and his family in 2003. Since then, the winery has moved forward in leaps and bounds. It has garnered many favourable reviews from renowned wine critics whilst collecting a swag of wine show medals and trophies.

James Kellie prides himself on delving into the true expression of the Great Southern’s sub-regions of Denmark, Porongurup, Frankland River and Mount Barker using grape varietals such as Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. As Harewood Estate says, “The art is on the inside” of every bottle.

The fruit is sourced from select, low yielding vineyards from each sub-region to produce cool climate wines James Halliday refers to as “Wines of exemplary quality and typicity.”

The grapes for this wine were sourced from one of the original plantings of Riesling in the Porongurup ranges of Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region.

Only the finest, more pristine, “free-run” juice was used in the production of this wine resulting in a palate of outstanding finesse, free from the harsh, phenolic characters and deeper colours associated with grape pressings.

A long, cool ferment in stainless steel tanks, minimal fining and the use of screw caps are all further steps towards capturing the inherent delicacy of this cool climate variety.

A brilliant, exceptionally pale straw colour with youthful green tinges.

The wine exhibits fine floral and citrus notes enhanced by an underlying flinty vibrancy.

An elegant, seamless palate with initial flavours of green apple and grapefruit leading to a crisp mid-palate with an underlying slate character finishing with classic mouth-watering lemons and limes. The fine structure is testament to the care taken during this wines production.
