Granite Hill The Gordon Cabernet

Granite Hills The Gordon Cabernet 2012

Macedon Ranges, Victoria   |    750ml   |    14.5%

95 Points - Patrick Eckel

Granite Hill's The Gordon has been one of our most popular Cabernets of the past few years and the 2012 vintage is another stunning version. These days it's rare to see a wine released with a bit of age on it, however it's a testament to the commitment to quality shown at Granite Hills.

A blend of the classic 'Bordeaux' varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, this a flavoursome very supremely elegant red wine brimming with ripe blackcurrant, dark chocolate and subtle spice. The impeccable structure and length of flavour makes it another standout cool-climate Cabernet from Granite Hills.

"95 Points. If there is ever an endorsement for the virtues of cool climate viticulture for the classical Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot than this is it. The wine is named after Llew Knight's father Gordon. The wine has been held back in bottle for 5 years prior to release and has allowed the wine to develop a wonderfully complex nose of blackberry, violets and graphite with a haunting array of cigar box like spice. The palate has a firm backbone of both acid and tannin, with Cabernet Franc in particular shining through with it’s black liquorice and tar that works in concert with blackberry and blackcurrant. Oak gives a dusting of spice and supple richness to the wine. The finish has incredible length of cassis and understated spice. Perched atop the spectacular boulder strewn slopes of the Great Dividing Range, midway between Mt Macedon and Heathcote, the Granite Hills vineyard lies at the interface of climates. Essentially cool due to an altitude of 550 metres, the warm and dry influence from Central Victoria, means the region is ideal for producing some outstanding quality wines.

With a reliable rainfall, freely drained soils and low disease pressure, it’s no mystery that this Estate is home to some very special wines, including one of Australia’s benchmark Rieslings as well as being heralded as the birthplace of peppery Shiraz. In fact, since the first plantings in 1970, Granite Hills has forged an enviable reputation as one of the countries most prized small family wineries by winning more than 400 awards from local and international shows.

Now approaching 40 years of pioneering Cool climate wines, the Knight family and dedicated staff, continue their pursuit through attentive vineyard management including hand pruning, hand picking and low yields, followed by an astute mix of modern and traditional winemaking techniques, to create wines with distinctive varietal and regional expression.
Macedon Ranges
This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Cabernet Franc (30%) Merlot (25%) made from hand harvested grapes grown on low-cropping 39-year-old vines, utilizing small pot fermentation, followed by maturation in French and American oak barrels for three years.

One of the best vintages in recent times, this wine leads with the ripe fragrance of Cabernet Franc followed by the deeper blackcurrant fruit of Cabernet Sauvignon and warm spicy cedar oak.

The palate is full and softly textured, with ripe berry fruit and chocolate flavours, framed by smooth mature tannins.
