Flowstone Queen Of The Earth Chardonnay 2016

Flowstone Queen Of The Earth Chardonnay 2016

Margaret River, Western Australia   |    750ml   |    13.5%

Flowstone is a tiny little grapegrower and winemaker just south of the Margaret River township, in the beautiful Forest Grove area. This is the personal project of the highly regarded Stuart Pym, who bring considerable winemaking experience (including stints at Voyager Estate, Stella Bella and Devils Lair) to Flowstone.

A wine made in tiny quantities (less than 100 dozen) the 2016 Flowstone Queen Of The Earth Chardonnay has all the hallmarks of top Margaret River Chardonnay; dense, focussed and intense. The powerful fruit flavours of peach, citrus are perfectly balanced with quality oak, while the lees contact and mlf adds further depth and complexity. A Chardonnay of great texture and length, the very limited stocks of the highly rated wine are sure to be snapped up by serious Chardonnay lovers.

"98 Points. A low yielding crop from the estate's home vineyard was fermented in equal parts new and used barriques, with full mlf, before a further 18 months of ageing in the same vessels, imparting a key lime zing to the aroma and a finely tuned meld of match strike flint. Lemon curd, white peach and grapefruit pulp purr along finely tuned mineral cylinders. This is exceptional, with winemaking a point. A challenge to differentiate between top white Burgundy and the stamp of a regional superstar! Screwcap. 13.5%. To 2027. To 2027. $55"- Ned Goodwin, Halliday Wine Companion 2020.

Tasting Note: Appearance: white-gold, with pale green highlights.

Aroma: Complex aromas of honey baked beurre bosc pears, stonefruit, roasted hazelnuts, nut-meal, hints of honeysuckle and creamy lees notes, offset by some funky flinty mineral notes. A complex expression of southern Margaret River Chardonnay.

Palate: Dense, focussed and intense - perfectly aligning the fruit and oak. The powerful fruit flavours are introspective at the moment, but still hold the palate together. Some years will see them blossom. The oak, lees contact and mlf give additional complexity. There is great texture and length, and a chalky acid to finish. The palate has great power and focus, but is not fat or heavy. This is a serious Chardonnay of substance and moment.

Drink: Now and over the next 16 years.
