Flametree has now firmly established itself as one of the stars wineries of Margaret River. Under the skilled winemaker of Cliff Royle (ex-Voyager Estate), the quality of their wines continues to rise to impressive levels. This 2015 Flametree Margaret River Shiraz is delicious, medium to full-bodied Margaret River Shiraz packed with loads of dark fruits, licorice, blueberry and plum flavours. With some quality French oak influence evident, this has the structure to cellar for many years to come.

"Margaret River shiraz, aged in all French oak. I’d reckon this needs a bit of time but I’d reckon this is very good. Aspects of it feel quite raw; others feel polished and sure. It certainly has plenty of heft, especially in regional shiraz terms. Intense plum, almost into blackberry. Plenty of clovey spice. A toastiness. A nuttiness. A trace of bitterness, but not in a hard or green way. A spread of ripe, assertive tannin, slightly raw but rolling into a good position. If this is going to be consumed young, it needs a lengthy decant. Long life ahead. WINEMAKING NOTES: Fruit was crushed, chilled, sulphured and given 3-6 days cold soak in a mix of open and static fermenters. Caps were plunged and/or pumped over twice daily. All batches were inoculated with selected Rhone yeast strains or wild fermented; the ferments were controlled at around 26-28 degrees. Select parcels were whole bunch fermented to encourage partial carbonic maceration and introduce vibrant, spicy strawberry fruit character, thus adding complexity to the final blend. The wines were inoculated for MLF, pressed off and then transferred into used French and American oak barrels. After 6 months in oak the 2015 Shiraz batches were blended, egg white fined and then bottled in March.

TASTING NOTES: Lifted blueberry, plums, liquorice and spice combine to create a soft fruit driven Shiraz style. The colour and perfume are testament to a fantastic Shiraz vintage. Soft extraction techniques using open fermenters have resulted in a wine with ripe fruit flavours and fine tannin structure. The palate has plenty of sweet dark fruits and spicy oak flavours. The introduction of a larger percentage of wild fermented batches has given the wine greater complexity and texture. The 2015 Shiraz was aged in older oak to preserve fruit flavours.
