Flametree Margaret River Shiraz

Flametree Margaret River Shiraz 2016

Margaret River, Western Australia   |    750ml   |    14%
Flametree has now firmly established itself as one of the stars wineries of Margaret River. Under the skilled winemaker of Cliff Royle (ex-Voyager Estate), the quality of their wines continues to rise to impressive levels. This 2016 Flametree Margaret River Shiraz is delicious, medium to full-bodied Margaret River Shiraz packed with loads of dark fruits, licorice, blueberry and plum flavours. With some quality French oak influence evident, this has the structure to cellar for many years to come.

"It’s an elegant wine, well-ripened, floral and perfumed, and gently sinewy. Margaret River almost never makes ‘big’ or heavy shiraz but this is ever-so-slightly lighter than the norm, though the complexity levels have been elevated as compensation. I like it. It’s not ready to drink right now, it needs a couple of years to start showing itself properly; it begs for a touch of age to creep in. Some faces just look better with a crease or two. Balance of fruit-oak-acid-tannin here is impeccable, as is the flourish to the finish. It’s a squeaky clean wine, but an interesting one. Admirable. With a future. Rated: 92+ Points Tasted: Jun18 Alcohol: 14% Price: $29 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2020 - 2024+" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

Established in 2007 by the Towner family, Flametree Wines was created with passion for wine and a vision to become a world recognised winery producing exceptional quality wines with a laid-back style and elegance.

By winning Australia's most well-known and respected wine accolade, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy, with their first ever red wine, Flametree Wines has firmly established themselves in the upper echelon of Margaret River wine producers.

Proving that this accolade was not a coincidence and that Flametree was actually deserving of the prestigious award, the next vintage was also a finalist in the following years' show. This unprecedented success has since continued, with many critic reviews and awards.

WINEMAKING NOTES: We mixed things up a little this year using some dried stems, whole bunch and some whole berries in the ferments, the idea was to get some additional perfume, structure and complexity into our Shiraz wines, More medium bodied than previous vintages, Pinot like winemaking techniques has given us a very different style of Shiraz than past vintages. The whole bunch and sun dried stem parcels were all wild fermented at cooler temperatures than previous vintages, this partial carbonic maceration introduces a vibrant, spicy red fruit component to the blend. After pressing the batches were inoculated for MLF and then transferred into used French oak puncheons. After 9 months in oak the batches were blended, and then bottled.

TASTING NOTES: Soft extraction techniques, cooler ferment temperatures and open fermenters has resulted in a wine with lifted perfume, dark fruit flavours and fine tannin structure. The palate has plenty of cherries, plums, scorched earth, liquorice and spice. The introduction of stems and a larger percentage of wild fermented batches has given the wine greater complexity and added texture. Enjoy now or anytime over the next 5-10 years.
