Top 100 Wines Of 2015 | 94 Points - James Halliday

Dominique Portet Sparkling is one of our longtime favourite sparkling wines and one with a loyal legion of fans. The current Dominique Portet Brut Rosé release is a blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, made in the traditional method and from grapes grown in two elevated vineyards in the upper Yarra Valley. The grapes were handpicked, gently pressed and fermented before going through the secondary fermentation inside this bottle. Following this, the wine was aged for two years inside their cellars then disgorged and lightly dosed prior to release.

Fans of this style will find plenty to enjoy here; this savoury sparkling wine delivers plenty of lively strawberry flavours, rose petals and a fresh, dry, creamy finish. An outstanding Australian sparkling wine that is ideal for enjoying in a wide range of occasions.

"94 Points. This is a traditional method blend of 50% pinot noir, 30% chardonnay and 20% pinot meunier, all grown in the Yarra Valley. Held on lees for 2 years prior to disgorgement and a light dosage. A totally delicious and elegantly poised wine, with fresh red fruits of every description dancing around on the bouquet and palate alike, the finish harmonious. "Dominique and Ben Portet present a complex, stylish wine that's always a strong contender for best sparkling rosé in Australia. Unlike many, yeast autolysis has a major role here. Smell that freshly baked brioche, the raspberries, feel the texture, taste the savoury impact it wields with precision. This is a sparkling of great persistence." - Jeni Port, goodfood.com.au, January 2015.

The Portet family boasts ten consecutive generations of winemaking that began in Bordeaux in the 18th century. Today, the Portet name is most closely associated with the Yarra Valley where father and son team Dominique and Ben Portet, respectively ninth and tenth generation winemakers, run a successful family winery.

Dominique Portet’s French lineage dates back to 1720 and the family’s sale of eaux de vie to the Martell family. Several generations later his father André Portet became régisseur (vineyard and winery manager) of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac.

Vine: The grapes for this traditional-method sparkling came from two elevated vineyards (325m) in the Upper Yarra. Both sites have benefited from very good growing conditions over recent vintages, with abundant warm days, cool nights and very little rain. This has allowed the fruit to ripen gradually with excellent flavour development and balanced sugars and acids.

Wine: The current release is a blend of the three classic Champagne grapes, Pinot Noir (50%), Chardonnay (30%) and Pinot Meunier (20%). The grapes were handpicked, gently pressed and fermented before going through secondary fermentation in bottle. The wine was then aged for two years in our cool, temperature-controlled cellars, then disgorged and given a light dosage prior to release.

Glass: Dominique Portet Brut Rosé NV is an elegant, savoury salmon-pink sparkling wine with a fine streaming bead and aromas of fresh strawberries and rose petals. These are mirrored on the creamy palate and evolve into a fresh, dry and lingering finish. It is ready to drink now as the perfect sparkling rosé to celebrate any occasion.
