Clos Clare Riesling

Clos Clare Riesling 2017

Clare Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    12%
Clos Clare is a boutique winery located in the famous Florita Vineyard of Watervale owned and run by 3rd generation wine growers/makers Sam and Tom Barry. The Barry family bought the property in 1986 from Leo Buring; the grapes from this vineyard went into making Buring's iconic Leonay Riesling. In a relatively short period of time, Clos Clare has established itself as a benchmark Clare Valley Riesling makers. The 2017 Clos Clare Riesling is another superb release bursting with plenty of typical lime and lemon flavours that is supported by vibrant acidity on a beautiful lineal structure. Should provide plenty of drinking pleasure over the next decade.

"‘Off the scale’, were the first few words written in my notes for this wine. The freshness and attack of fruit is unnerving and it is so much pointier and piercing than the languid, lush 2016. With more brio and zip, added to an immensely long finish, this is a quintessential Clare Riesling performing at the very top of its game. I have followed this estate since the early Nineties and always marvelled at the wine’s minerality and poise but the Barry brothers have taken it to a new level of clarity and precision and in 2017 the husk, pith and ozone tanginess is heavenly. I had the occasion to open this wine alongside some mighty world competition, including wines which were twice the price, and it was embarrassing how elite and masterful it looked as it towered over the other bottles." - Matthew Jukes, 100 Best Australian Wines.

Clos Clare is a boutique winery located in the famous Florita Vineyard of Watervale (Clare Valley, SA) owned and run by 3rd generation wine growers/makers Sam and Tom Barry.

The Barry family bought this property in 1986 from Leo Buring in which the fruit from this vineyard went into making the benchmark Leonay wine. When the Warilto Homestead was sub-divided including a small 45 year old 5 acre parcel of the vineyard to Ian Saunders, clos Clare was born and is now proudly the wines of the Barry brothers.

The Hayes vineyard is situated in the Amaragh Valley north west of the Clare township and as planted in 1975. Originally dry bush grown vines they are now trellised and run with Bio-Dynamic practices since 2007.

As the third generation of the Barry winemaking family, we now hold the keys to this boutique winery. Riesling is the Clare Valley's signature variety and this is our ninth vintage from clos Clare's Riesling patch, adjoining the historic 'Florita' vineyard in Watervale. The 46-year-old dry grown vines were hand-harvested on the 21st of Feburary and taken to The Wilson Vineyard at Polish Hill River, where they were chilled for 24 hours prior to whole bunch pressing and vinification.

The 2017 Watervale Riesling has beautifully lifted aromatics of apple, grapefruit and lemon. The palate has great drive and generosity of flavour, grapefruit, lemon and citrus peel, with a soft, chalky texture and a juicy line of acid.
