Bests Riesling

Bests Great Western Riesling 2018

Grampians, Victoria   |    750ml   |    11%

Best's Great Western consistently produce aromatic, flavoursome and perfectly structured Rieslings that stand alongside Australia's great Riesling. The 2018 Best's Great Western Riesling is another excellent example of this variety that is already receiving plenty of plaudits.

"96 Points. Pale straw-green; the bouquet is enticing, but it's the palate that sends all the senses into overdrive. Intense lime juice intersects with shiny bright acidity. This takes mouthwatering flavours onto new levels. Great length inevitably follows, promising a very long life. The Great Western subregion deserves far greater recognition for its rieslings. $25.00 Alcohol 11% Drink By: 2032 Closure: Screwcap. 11% alc" - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2020.

"A consistently excellent riesling from stalwart producer Best's. This is an outstanding release and a no-brainer for cellaring, especially at this price point. It's highly perfumed with citrus and floral characters, pure in grapefruit and apple flavours to taste, but it's the scintillating line of acidity and tight squeaky finish that determines this wine's pedigree and potential for a long life in a cellar. Drink now, sure, but also drink over the next 20 years."- Mike Bennie, Gourmet Traveller Wine 'Wines to Cellar' (Dec/Jan 2019)

With beginnings in 1866, Best’s Great Western is home to some of Australia’s oldest and most significant vineyards. Best's have a strong reputation for producing world-class wines for over 148 years in Victoria’s Great Western region.

As one of Australia’s oldest and continuously family owned and operated wineries, Best's craft extraordinary and iconic wines of elegance and longevity. Their flagship wine, the Thomson Family Shiraz, has an 'Outstanding' designation from the revered Langton’s Auction house and Bin O Shiraz is rated as 'Distinguished'.

Owned by just two families since 1866, the Best family who founded the winery, and today, their vision lives on through the Thomson’s, having purchased the property after Henry Best’s death in 1920.
The Riesling vines from Great Western produce flavorsome, elegantly structured, spectacularly age-worthy Rieslings which stand confidently alongside some of the most outstanding Australian examples of the variety. In recent times, the style has evolved to match the continental climatic conditions to a beautifully balanced wine with texture and aromatics.

Colour: Very pale straw with green and silver hints

Bouquet: Lifted and intense aromatics of musk, honeysuckle, kaffir lime leaf and crushed rock.

Palate: Fine and fragrant with a steely acidity that drives the palate. The fruit weight smooths the edges and a powdery lime rind and river stone minerality holds everything in place for a long finish.

Cellaring: The Rieslings of Best’s have a proven ability to mature gracefully for 20 years or more. This example is no exception and its youthful freshness is a good sign for its long life in the cellar. It will gather complex toasty aromas and flavours as the years pass. Absolutely delicious with spinach and ricotta canneloni.

Vintage: The vineyard got off to a great start, but dry conditions throughout the spring triggered a devastating frost on 4th November. The grapes on the lower vineyards were lost, but those on higher elevations where largely unaffected. Apart from a few warm days in January the conditions were excellent and perfect ripening weather continued long into the Autumn. A standout year for Riesling with high natural acidity and fine flavours and aromas.
