Adelina Mataro Shiraz

Adelina Shiraz Mataro 2018

Clare Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    13.5%
The Adelina vineyards are situated in Spring Farm Valley, just south of the township of Clare. Their neighbours include the famous vineyards of Wendouree, Aberfeldy and Sevenhill Cellars. Established in 2002, Adelina is one of the Clare Valley's most exciting wine producers, delivering a modern take on some of the region's hero varietals, including Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and some stunning Rieslings.

This 2018 Adelina Shiraz Mataro is made from grapes grown in the Springfarm sub-area of the Clare Valley, with the Mataro and most of the Shiraz fruit coming from the famed Aberfeldy Vineyard, plus a little Adelina estate fruit. All up, an imposing 60-70% of this wine comes from vines with an age of around 100 years. The combination of these old vines and some skilled winemaking has helped deliver a Clare Valley red of finesse and savoury complexity, which all things considered offers incredible value for money.

"95 Points. So much to like from the Adelina stable of wines. Medium weight, fine tannins, layers of spice, restrained red and blue berry fruitiness, a web of Italianate tannins and herbs and brambly savouriness rolled in. It sits tight and dart-shaped in the palate, draws exceptionally long, feels not for now but later yet still has a compelling thing to it that asks you to keep at your glass. Dark-sour cherry, amaro, clove all happening. Superb wine here, all structure and yet all appeal. Tasted: JULY19 13.5% alc Price: $26 Screwcap Drink: 2019 - 2030+" - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.

"94 Points. There's a wealth of vibrant dark plums here with a deep, herb and asphalt edge as well. The palate carries a very plush, fresh and lively feel with impressive depth and elegance. A blend of 68% shiraz and 32% mataro. Drink or hold. Screw cap."- Nick Stock, jamessuckling.com

The Adelina vineyards are situated in Spring Farm Valley, just south of the township of Clare. Their neighbours include the vineyards of Wendouree, Aberfeldy and Sevenhill Cellars. The small Adelina plantings were originally established around 1910; mostly Shiraz and Grenache with small plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

The vineyard is right next door to Birk’s Wendouree so we know the terroir is good! The Gardner family has owned the Spring Farm Estate, which is the site of both the Adelina winery and vineyards, since 1986. Prior to the inception of Adelina Wines in 2000, the property was managed by Will and Elaine Gardner, and the fruit was sold to Tim Adams.

In 2002, Col McBryde and Jen Gardner, Will and Elaine’s daughter, took over responsibility for the vineyards and launched Adelina wines which are made exclusively from the Estate vineyards. The pair has been involved in winemaking and research since the mid-90s.

Today Adelina is one of the Clare Valley's most exciting wine producers, delivering a modern take on some of the region's hero varietals, including Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and some stunning Rieslings.
