Greenstone is without doubt one of the most exciting new wineries to emerge over the past few years. Greenstone is a collaboration between seasoned viticulturalist Mark Walpole; UK based wine writer and importer, David Gleave MW; and Alberto Antonini, a Flying Italian winemaker. Whatever these three men are doing is working extremely well, as they have just followed up their exceptional 2005 inaugural release with another stunning example of Heathcote Shiraz. Whilst there is no shortages of Heathcote Shiraz currently on the market, few come close to the quality and value on offer here.
"95 Points. Grapes picked at optimal ripeness, producing a wine that is stacked with regional black fruits but has no alcohol-derived sweetness; long finish with fine-grained tannins. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. To 2021" - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2009 Edition.
"It is extraordinary to think this is only the second vintage, give it plenty of air to reveal deep red and bramble fruits notes, blueberry too with earthy savoury spice and pepper notes. A very restrained oak builds to a plush palate with velvety tannins and tangy acidity." - Jane Faulkner, The Age, ‘A2’ May 23, 2009.
"95 (96) points. lots of brambly fruit here; there’s an earthy gunpowder sniff too. Gets kumquat peel with air. Plenty of brambly, pippy berry fruit, building firm grippy tannins identifying this as a serious red. There’re wholemeal oak characters and a touch of sumac at the back. Puts most other Heathcote reds to shame, including more expensive ones, especially in the matter of balance. Even better with a few years in bottle" - Tim White, Financial Review, January 2009.
