Tim Smith Mataro Grenache Shiraz 2012

Barossa Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    14.5%
Tim Smith is an incredibly talented winemaker and one of Australia's most awarded. Tim Smith focuses on making wines from the region's time proven varietals of Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz.

Discovering more old vine mataro and grenache in the 'gardens' of Tim Smith’s Barossa growers, provides him the perfect opportunity to craft a blend that is quite aromatic and in the 'Rhone Style' that he loves. Retaining all the plush palate weight is the hallmark of this wine, which is always purposefully mataro dominant. This allows the mataro fruit, which has a similar tannin structure as shiraz, to be ready to drink upon release as well as having some serious cellaring potential.

“95 Points. Have to say, from what I’ve tasted, 2012 is certainly a vintage where you can start to believe the hype. Spice, nuts, flowers, blood plum, a little chocolate and liquorice - sweetly fruited, yet it pulls savoury and firm. And boy oh boy, as the hungry cartoon dog says, is this a delicious wine. Pleasantly gritty tannin, gentle slipperiness, balanced acidity and lip smacking pure fruit appeal and hazelnutty flavours bring it home. Let’s rate it appropriately highly, I think. Tasted: May13 Alcohol: 14% Price: $28 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2013 - 2020" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

"Beautiful old Barossa flavours generously captured: earthy smells, smoked and braised meats. Rich, warm and matro-hearty yet juicy, too, balancing the blend back from full towards medium bodied. Seasoned gently in old barrel and in great shape for excellent drinking" - Tony Love, The Advertiser, July 19, 2013.

“I am a huge fan of the wines of Bandol, and I unashamedly draw inspiration from this Southern Rhone appellation. My Barossa Mataro Grenache Shiraz is made with Mataro being the dominant grape. This allows the Mataro fruit, which has a similar tannin structure as Shiraz, to be ready to drink upon release as well as having some serious cellaring potential.” - Tim Smith.

"Discovering more Old Vine Mataro and Grenache in the 'Gardens' of my Barossa growers has given me extra opportunity to craft a blend this year that is quite aromatic, in the 'Rhone Style' that I love, and retaining all the plush palate weight that is the hallmark of this wine. The nose has quite lifted mataro varietal aromas of violets, and spicy fruit. Some subtle grenache derived strawberry notes are also apparent. The palate is layered and long, with grenache giving fruit sweetness and finishes with gravelly tannins which should set the wine up well for medium term cellaring."- Tim Smith.
