Moppity Vineyards is a flagship producer of the Hilltops region that recently rocketed to prominence, having claimed some of the most coveted prizes in Australian wine making. This 2011 'Lock & Key' Riesling was a big favourite of ours and the newly released 2012 vintage in another outstanding Riesling from Moppity.

"92/100. The New South Wales Hilltops region looks a great place to grow riesling. This bargain-priced example from Moppity Vineyards is pale and bright with a lifted, estery aroma that hints at lime and other fresh-cut citrus fruits. Some steely mineral threads give it a subtle savoury accent, and the palate is quite dry and rather austere in style, with sustained, pure varietal flavour, a savoury herbal touch and a zesty, lip-smacking ending. (Screw cap; 11 per cent alcohol.) Ageing? Drink over six years. Food ideas Sushi; fritto misto of seafood." - Ralph Kyte-Powell.

The Hilltops region of New South Wales is undoubtedly one of Australia's most exciting wine regions, with the likes of Clonakilla, Barwang, Eden Road and Moppity all doing great things. We recently tasted several outstanding releases from Moppity, and whilst this is the entry-level Riesling in the range, this offers some seriously good drinking.
