Kay Brothers Amery Block 6 Shiraz 2010

McLaren Vale, South Australia   |    750ml   |    14.5%
Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz has firmly established itself as one of Australia's most sought after wines. Made using traditional open fermenters originally built by the Kay Brothers in the late 1890's. Following fermentation, the wine is drained and basket pressed into predominantly new American and Balkan oak for a 28 month maturation period.

This is always a stunning example of McLaren Shiraz with a long cellaring potential, and we expect the extremely limited stocks of the newly released 2010 Kay Brothers Amery Block 6 Shiraz to sell out quickly.

"96 Points. Tasted non-blind over two days against 2010 Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz. Same, same, but very different wines. Black fruit, raspberry, pepper, licorice and spice - savoury toasted coconut oak plays a part yet still allows full fruit expression. Full bodied but light on its feet, with a sweep of fine lightly chalky tannin, meat and bramble fruit and a little mint-complex flavours and great structure - but mostly I love the depth and purity fruit here. So impressive. Big finish and no alcohol heat whatsoever. Integrity and charisma. A superb expression of vintage, winery and vineyard. Tasted: Nov12 Alcohol: 14.5% Price: $70 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2014 - 2030+" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

".... Block 6 is one of the legendary vineyards of Australia and the fact that this wine can be bought for a two figure sum is, frankly, baffling. Every year it kicks forty or fifty other so-called “cult” wines into touch with its brooding, bitumen, liquorice and black olive flavours. It is always an honour to taste this wine and it will remain an immense pleasure for us all to revisit this estate every time we are in the Vale.” - Matthew Jukes/Tyson Stelzer, Taste Food & Wine, 2008 Edition.

Review of the 2009 vintage below;

"95 Points. Lighter colour than the Hillside, despite coming from the original 1896 1.8-ha Hillside block of 117-year-old vines. Hand-picked, fermented in 1896 fermenters, basket-pressed, and matured for over two years in new American and Baltic oak barriques. The intensity of the fruit flavours is remarkable, although I'm not sure about the duck confit flavours ex the back label; the intense fruit has made light work of all that oak, and the tannins are mouthwatering. Drink By: 2040 Price: $75.00 Date Tasted: 05 Feb 2012 Alcohol: 13%" - James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au.

Established in 1890, Kay Brothers Amery is one of Australia's winemaking treasures. Remarkably this McLaren Vale icon is still in founding family hands with Colin Kay continuing to produce some of South Australia's finest examples of Shiraz.
