Curly Flat Pinot Noir 2010

Curly Flat Pinot Noir 2010

Macedon Ranges, Victoria   |    750ml   |    14%
The inspiration for Curly Flat Vineyard was Phillip Moraghan's experiences whilst studying in Switzerland in the 1980’s. During this period he was captivated by the many wine regions of France and Switzerland and completely enthralled by Burgundy and its Pinot Noir.

The 2010 Curly Flat Pinot Noir is unmistakably Pinot Noir. The full spectrum of the Pinot Noir profile is on offer here as earthy, briary tones intersperse with fresh red and black summer berries and straps of red liquorice. Darker notes of black cherries and charred meats then appear, providing a firm stage for all these ethereal notes to play out upon. All this merges seamlessly with interplay of spicy tones which are not only derived by balanced oak inputs but also via subtle whole bunch stem inclusion.

“94+ Points. Curly Flat is now a mature estate heading into its prime. This is a delicate pinot noir. Restrained. Earthen. Savoury. All good things. Flavours of cherries and mint, brown bread and crushed dry spice. Fine, firm tannin gives it a discipline. Minerally, steely tannin. Water-based rather than alcohol-based, as pinot noir should be. Gorgeous, flavoursome, sappy length. Oak adds texture and polish. Excellent. Drink : 2016 - 2022+" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

"5 out of 5. Winemaker Phillip Moraghan believes this is the best Curly Flat pinot to date. Perfumed and pretty, it is packed with cherry, plum, raspberry, toasty oak and spice flavours. Part of this was fermented with whole bunches - stalks and all - which has imparted a perfumed lift and a stalky vegetal character that adds an extra layer of complexity. There’s fabulous energy and tension to this - hallmarks of a great wine - along with silky-smooth texture, bright acidity and a finish that fans out and builds intensity as it flows along the tongue." - Ben Thomas, The Weekly Review, November 2012.

The inspiration for Curly Flat Vineyard was Phillip Moraghan's experiences whilst studying in Switzerland in the 1980’s. During this period he was captivated by the many wine regions of France and Switzerland and completely enthralled by Burgundy and its Pinot Noir. Fortunately for Phillip, his partner Jeni shared the vision that has brought together the dedicated team to nurture Curly Flat from a romantic ideal to awe-inspiring reality. Pursuit of the dream and a cool climate suited to Pinot Noir, brought Phillip and Jeni to Lancefield in the Macedon Ranges near Melbourne. The high altitude region is ideally suited to wine growing, with well drained volcanic soils and moderate rainfall.

"Appearance: Bright crimson tending to brick red. Bouquet: An intense primary nose charged by plums and dark cherries whilst red fruits and allspice provide further ambience. Behind the fruit/spice character lie deeper savoury characters in the form of leather, meat stock and bacon fat char.

Palate: Like the nose, fleshy plum spearheads ahead of the dark/red cherry burst. With good palate weight, mouth filling dark chocolate/mocha tannins gives initially firm but ultimately velvety support and focus from start to finish. The acid thread provides good persistence and lasting presence.

Overall Impression: A fist in a velvet glove accurately serves this brooding yet elegant Pinot Noir. With only a short distance travelled, we look forward to the journey on what portends to be a long enjoyable road." - Curly Flat Wines.
