When Robert Hill Smith from Australia's oldest family owned winery, Yalumba, joined forces with Clare winemaker extraordinaire, Jeffrey Grosset to create a new Eden Valley Riesling, it was clear that this would be no ordinary wine. The newly released 2009 vintage is once again a stunning example, displaying wonderful structure and intensity.
"96 Points. It will take a very long time for this wine to reach its peak, but it will emerge as one of the finest vintages to date. It’s a restrained Mesh, more about profoundly structured, slatey minerality than layered Granny Smith apple fruit and lifted lemon blossom aromatics" - Tyson Stelzer, Wine 100 Magazine, December 2009.
"Mesh is of course the riesling collaboration between Jeffrey Grosset and Robert Hill Smith. The project started with the 2002 vintage and the standard has always been high. The quality of this 2009 certainly is. In beautiful shape. Characterised by its long, limey strike through the finish. Goes on and on like a commercial DJ. Notes of gunmetal and slate. Terrific intensity. Ripper. Rated : 94 Points Alcohol : 12% Closure : Screwcap Drink : 2009 - 2015" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
"Very pale straw-green; a delicate but fragrant and flowery bouquet is yet to flex its muscles; the perfectly weighted palate is very long and pure, reflecting its very low pH and substantial acidity. A perfectly formed, newborn baby. 12% alc/vol; $29; drink 2013–2024" - James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au.
"93 Points. This combination of Jeffrey Grosset and Robert Hill Smith’s...resources has created a wine with classic citrus blossom and a little lemon creaminess for a fuller profile, though a solid wall of citrus flavour follows." - Tony Love, The Advertiser, December 16 2009.
"The 2009 mesh Eden Valley Riesling is green and vibrant in appearance. The aroma is of zesty lemon and grapefruit with a hint of dried herbs. Lively and generous on the palate, with intense citrus fruit flavours and hints of talc. The wine finishes clean and dry with refreshing slaty acidity. As is the case with all great Eden Valley Rieslings, mesh will age gracefully and reliably into a mature wine under the Stelvin closure." - Winery notes.
