Tasmania is increasingly being recognised as home to some of Australia’s leading cool-climate winemaking. Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine, all thrive in the extremely cool climate of our island state.

There are no official wine regions in Tasmania, with the whole island of Tasmania classified as an official wine zone. However, there is a broad division between Northern Tasmania and Southern Tasmania and within this division there are distinct viticultural areas which include Pipers Brook, Tamar Valley, the North West and Eastern Tasmania, and in the south, the Derwent Valley, Coal River Valley and Huon Valley.

The island has a range of microclimates and soil types that gives Tasmanian wines their diversity of character. With increasing concerns from mainland wineries about the affects of global warming, many are looking at Tasmania as an option for cool-climate viticulture.

In mid-2010, King Valley based Brown Brothers purchased the Tamar Valley winery, identifying the opportunity to expand its production of Pinot Noir and premium sparkling wine.
