Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz 2011

Eden Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    14%
The Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz has been one of the most popular wines we've offered over the past few years, always offering plenty of bang for buck. The newly released 2011 vintage is another superb example of Eden Valley Shiraz; dark in colour it has some delicious, juicy black fruits dominating the palate with a power and approachability that is such a feature of Eden Valley Shiraz.

Reviews of the 2010 vintage included below;

"A striking value red whose quality and price needed a double take. I haven’t seen this wine before, so I don’t know if it’s a freak, but it’s hard to forget. Not a beast, but rather a stylish, lithe, persistent and remarkably long-tasting red. A very good, more normal vintage in the Eden Valley has presented typical fruit characters of raspberry, cherry and mocha, which obviously really skillful and educated winemaking have shaped and seasoned a little with older, pre-used oak to leave a natural and bright looking wine. It’s no good trying to find faults or shortcomings in this; they’re just not there. That length reveals only gentle and persistently delicious flavours and a nice little grip. Better get some of this."- David Ridge The Adelaide Review Sept 2011.

"First Class. It opens with high-toned raw-fruit character but, with air, plum, blackberry, spice and warm-earth aromas develop. The palate is medium-bodied, smooth and ripe, with mellow, fine tannins." - Ralph Kyte - Powell, The Age Epicure, August 16, 2011.

"Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz has been a stand-out performer - given its reasonable price - in recent years. This release is a lovely drink, no doubting it. It’s fleshy and dark berried and yet bright with flavour. Blueberries and mineral, tar and blackberry. It’s almost a touch beery and almost peppery too - but not quite either. It needs time to settle further but the fruit is exuberant and the tannin fruity. I like the poise of this wine. And the flavour. Rated: 90+ Points Alcohol: 14% Price: $18 Closure: Screwcap. Drink: 2012 - 2017” - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

"Estate single vineyard wine grown in the chilly surrounds of Mount McKenzie in the Eden Valley. This label represents our rendition of Eden Valley Shiraz which is the non dried portion fruit that of Frost Dodger Shiraz and is aged in ex Frost Dodger barrels. Winter rainfall in the Eden Valley was below average with a slight frost during the last week of October which reduced yields by 20%. December rainfall was much needed as ahead of us was summers bright start up with our grapeyard once again overcoming the extreme heatwave in early February and continued to prevail with milder slower ripening conditions to produce a beautifully aromatic and flavousome Shiraz. Once again very minimalistic workings including 25% whole bunch open top ferment, wild yeast fermented, soft pump overs / hand plunging, basket pressed, aged for 13 months and bottled unfiltered."- Notes from Torzi Matthews.
