Barossa Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    14.5%
Tim Smith's 2010 Mataro Grenache Shiraz blend showcases these varietals with all fruit sourced from low yielding, Barossa vines. Smith employs traditional winemaking practices including partial whole bunch fermentation, basket pressing and ageing on fine yeast lees in old french oak hogsheads.

"94 Points. Has excellent depth to the colour, and likewise to the display of black and red cherry, plum and plum cake fruit on the bouquet and medium- to full-bodied palate. Here is a wine to challenge the Rhone Valley. Whole bunch, barrel ageing on lees, no fining or filtration. 14.5%"- James Halliday, Wine Companion Magazine, December 2011.

"It’s two-thirds mataro and in keeping with the trend of things - we’d argue here at The Wine Front that you can never really have too much mataro/mourvedre. It’s a deceptive wine. It comes across as sweet, easy-going and simple at first but the harder you look the more you find. It’s got an understated class about it. Nice kiss of cedary oak. Attractive mix of earth and blackberried/raspberried fruit. Juicy acidity. Grainy tannin. Nice length. And a citrussy/orange-like flush through the finish. A very good drink, that’s what it is. Will get better in the short term but it’s lovely drink now for sure. Rated: 91+ Points Alcohol: 14.5% Price: $28 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2013 - 2017" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

"Discovering more Old Vine Mataro and Grenache in the 'Gardens' of my Barossa growers has given me extra opportunity to craft a blend this year that is quite aromatic, in the 'Rhone Style' that I love, and retaining all the plush palate weight that is the hallmark of this wine. The nose has quite lifted mataro varietal aromas of violets, and spicy fruit. Some subtle grenache derived strawberry notes are also apparent. The palate is layered and long, with grenache giving fruit sweetness and finishes with gravelly tannins which should set the wine up well for medium term cellaring."- Tim Smith.
