Pirie Sparkling Non Vintage

Pirie Sparkling NV

Pirie Sparkling NV

Tasmania, Tasmania   |    750ml   |    11%
Dr Andrew Pirie established Pipers Brook back in 1974, with the firm belief Tasmania could be one the great wine regions of the world. 'Pirie Tasmania' is the culmination of the viticultural and winemaking experience amassed during Pirie’s 30 consecutive vintages in northern Tasmania, a knowledge base matched by very few individuals in any wine region of Australia.

"94 Points. Pale colour; focused and fresh lemon fruit and spring blossom bouquet; generous and creamy mouthfeel, with linear acidity and well-handled dosage; very good focus" - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010 Edition.

"92/100. Fine bead, lovely yeast/toast nose; great balance in the mouth. Works on two levels - fruit travelling on top with flavours unfolding, well supported underneath with acid leading to a good long finish. 92 points and excellent value at $32." - Tony Keys - The Key Report.

"Aromas and flavours of stewed apples, caramel and toasted brioche on a light and finely textured palate with lively acid and a lovely long and dry biscuity finish" - Graeme Phillips, Hobart Mercury.

"It’s been 10 years since the first Pirie sparkling was officially uncorked. Of course, that was a vintage wine, and Pipers Brook based. This release dances to a different beat with slightly richer, more powerful fruit from the Tamar Valley. That noted, the wine’s additional weight and texture is not compromised by soft acidity. Instead, there’s good drinking enjoyment here, with the touch of class you’d expect for $32" - Mark Smith, Launceston Examiner

"In keeping with high quality sparkling the wine looks great in the glass. It has a tiny bead and is lively. There are bread characters on the nose, with lemon fruit and refreshing acid combining on a creamy palate. It should be noted that as well as pushing his own wine, the Pirie promotional material also describes Tasmania as the “home of Australia’s Greatest Sparkling Wine.” This combined approach has been taken on by other leading Tasmanian sparkling producers and it is a message that can benefit all in the long term." - Mike Burnett, Launceston Examiner

Pirie Tasmania is the latest evolution of one man's belief that Tasmania can be one of the truly great wine regions of the world. As Australia's first PhD in viticulture, founder of Pipers Brook Vineyard (1973-2002) and more recently Pirie Estate and SOUTH labels (est 2004,) and recipient of the Australian Medal for his services to Tasmanian wine and tourism (2001,) Andrew Pirie's contribution to the industry is indisputable, as now is Tasmania's position as a jewel in the crown of Australian wine.

Free run juice and light pressings (max 0.2 bar) oxidatively handled. Blending of multiple parcels from the Upper Tamar Valley with some aged, reserve wines. 20% of blend was fermented and matured in puncheons (500 Litre) French barrels for between 2 and 6 months. Tirage and secondary ferment in bottle (méthode traditionelle) followed by a minimum of 18 months on lees before disgorging. A pale straw/gold colour with a fine and persistent bead. Bready and biscuity autolysis notes from lees ageing are balanced by crisp apples and citrus lift. Vibrant lemony acidity adds drive to a full and rich mid-palate, vigorous mousse and a slaty, mineral persisting finish.
