Charles Melton Rose Of Virginia Rosé 2011

Barossa Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    13%
New vintage. There are few wine varieties more suitable to the Australian climate than Rosé, with the best examples being fragrant and refreshing whilst offering flavour and structure. Charles Melton has firmly established himself as one of Australia's finest producers of Rosé and the 2011 version is once again superb.

"94 Points. Vivid puce; after a brief period of skin contact before pressing, the free run juice was cold-fermented for six weeks and has svelte sweet fruit (not sugar-sweet) flavours that provide great mouthfeel, length and balance. Food style; forget the '11 demons. Drink By: 2013 Price: $23.50 Date Tasted: 05 Aug 2011 Alcohol: 12.5%"- James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au.

"Stalwart Barossa wine producer Charlie Melton makes some of Australia’s best traditional style reds - but no white wines. However, many years ago, when he was wooing his (then) girlfriend Virginia, he created a pink wine in her honour, cunningly naming it Rose of Virginia - pronounced as the flower, not the French word for pink - rose. Charlie and Virginia are now married and Rose of Virginia has become a benchmark pink. It’s based on grenache, with generous raspberry flavours, a dash of all-spice and a hint of sweetness to round out the finish."- Peter Bourne, Gourmet Traveller Wine, October/ November 2011.

"Rose of Virginia Charles Melton’s Rose is always one of the first to market - and one of the first to sell out too. I generally find myself leaning towards the Provençal style these days but the crisp vibrancy of what Melton delivers has lost none of its legitimacy.
And I really like this 2011 release. It feels beautifully dry through the finish. It tastes of rose petals, rubber, dried herbs and strawberries. There’s almost a - most welcome - undergrowth-like character here. This release is a beauty. Rated: 92 Points Alcohol: 12.5% Price: $22 Closure: Screwcap Drink : 2011 - 2013" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

Charles Melton Wines has produced premium Barossa red wines, always at his winery on Krondorf Road, since 1984. It was in the mid 80's that Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what was considered then a couple of unfashionable varieties; Shiraz and Grenache.
With these varieties, Charlie built a small range of classic dry reds including a Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre blend called the Nine Popes. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhone but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right.

"The Rose of Virginia production involves a number of key techniques. Co-fermentation of the varieties gives us our lovely pink colour, and a variation in skin contact times allows us to arrive at just the right combination of colour and tannin. The slow, cool fermentation is stopped when just a few grams of natural grape sugar are left in the wine. This to soften rather than sweeten. Picking slightly early helps retain the natural acidity to give some zest and crispness on the palate." - Charles Melton Wines.
