A sensational blend of Tempranillo and Shiraz, 'Picante 'Gran Meseta' was recently rated the best Spanish red wine under $50 by the expert tasting panel at Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine. At the great price of $14.90, the 2009 Picante Espana 'Gran Meseta' is a bargain import not to be missed.

"Best Spanish Red Under $50. 94 Points. Has rich, dark plummy fruit on the nose. (Huon) Hooke applauded it. "Sweetly ripe, rich aroma," he started. "Lots of dark fruits - blackberry and a hint of blueberry. Ample, soft tannins coat the mouth. There's good length and it has gravitas.". This is a substantial wine for the price, with what it takes to age. It drinks well now, too"- Gourmet Traveller Wine, February/ March 2012.

"This is a scary wine, not because it’s unpleasant - indeed, it’s fabulous - but because it’s so cheap. Shiraz is added to Spain’s hero red variety, tempranillo, giving it additional depth and generosity. It’s a bright, fresh red of sweet plum and boysenberry flavours with dusty spices and fresh aniseed. Look for it at your favourite tapas bar."- Peter Bourne, The Sydney Magazine.

"A core of intensely flavoured Tempranillo provides structure and tannin with rich fruit Shiraz adding mid palate weight and a supple texture. Finally a component of de-classified Rioja Tempranillo adds complexity and length. The fruit is 100% de-stemmed and given a cool maceration before fermentation in stainless steel. In the Joven style, the majority of the wine is matured in stainless steel on lees to maintain fruit vibrancy with a component undergoing carbonic maceration. A further component is aged in two to three year old oak barrels. A dark and rich red colour is followed by an expansive nose showing case bright, ripe berry aromas and dusty spice. The palate is lively and very much fruit driven, beginning with a rush of juicy, supply red berry flavours before being wrapped in fine grained tannins."- Javier Murua, Picante Espana.
