Curly Flat Pinot Noir 2012

Macedon Ranges, Victoria   |    750ml   |    14%

96 Points - James Halliday

Curly Flat has become one of our favourite Australian Pinot Noir's over the last decade, and we've watched with keen interest as interest in the winery continues to rise. The 2012 Curly Flat Pinot Noir is again in fine form, delivering a drinking experience rarely found in "new-world' Pinot Noir.

The 2012 Curly Flat Estate Pinot Noir is unmistakably a top class Pinot Noir; the full spectrum of varietal profile is on offer here as earthy, briary tones intersperse with fresh red and black summer berries and straps of red liquorice. Darker notes of black cherries and charred meats then appear, providing a firm stage for all these ethereal notes to play out upon. All this merges seamlessly with interplay of spicy tones which are not only derived by balanced oak inputs but also via subtle whole bunch stem inclusion.

"96 Points. Estate-grown; open fermented, 4% whole bunches, three-day cold soak, wild yeast, 20 days on skins, French oak (25% new) for 20 months. The bright crimson colour and fragrant bouquet lead into a supple, full-flavoured (cherry/plum/spice) palate with immaculate length and balance. Will stand tall against its forebears." - James Halliday, Wine Companion Magazine, Dec 2014.

“95 Points. Medium light red colour, with a merest trace of purple. The bouquet is sappy, spicy & rose petal scented. Quite complex & inviting. A delicious wine with lots of fruit sweetness & charm.Clean & fragrant, light to medium bodied, but intense & stylish. There's a sneaky, surprising richness that builds towards the back of the palate.Totally yum.”- Huon Hooke,

"95 Points. An outstanding release from Curly Flat. Silken, highly aromatic, has fruit depth and yet it’s light on its feet, racy almost, and correspondingly lengthy. This is a Curly Flat Pinot Noir for the true believers. Fleshy, succulent, deep, smooth and spicy. A standout. Alcohol: 14.2% Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2015 - 2023+" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

The inspiration for Curly Flat Vineyard was Phillip Moraghan's experiences whilst studying in Switzerland in the 1980’s. During this period he was captivated by the many wine regions of France and Switzerland and completely enthralled by Burgundy and its Pinot Noir. Fortunately for Phillip, his partner Jeni shared the vision that has brought together the dedicated team to nurture Curly Flat from a romantic ideal to awe-inspiring reality. Pursuit of the dream and a cool climate suited to Pinot Noir, brought Phillip and Jeni to Lancefield in the Macedon Ranges near Melbourne. The high altitude region is ideally suited to wine growing, with well drained volcanic soils and moderate rainfall.
Macedon Ranges
APPEARANCE Ruby red, youthfully bright and clear.

BOUQUET A complex nose with many layers. Floral aromatics of violets & lavender merge with red fruits ranging from wild strawberry to Satsuma plum. The entrancing spectrum then runs into more savoury territory of game meats and earthen richness, framed by alluring oak spice.

PALATE Persistent cherry fruit diffuses into a red fruited glow that is elegantly framed by tones of autumnal undergrowth and dark chocolate. With an ambient, yet voluminous mouthfeel, firm velvety tannins coordinate with good acidity, providing high definition to the overall complexity.

CELLARING SUGGESTIONS At once dense, yet delicate, lithe, but luxurious. While youthful now, this wine is imbued with a great frame for bottle age suggestive that it will be a joy at every stage over the next 12+ years. In comparison to past vintages, it has the punch of our 2006 but with the sophistication reminiscent of the 2010.
