Charles Melton Rose 2012

Charles Melton Rose Of Virginia Rosé 2012

Barossa Valley, South Australia   |    750ml   |    13%
Sorry the 2012 Charles Melton Rose Of Virginia Rosé 2012 is now sold out. 2013 vintage due for release in May 2013.

Charles Melton has firmly established itself as one of Australia's leading Rosé makers. The 2012 vintage marks the 25th consecutive vintage of this wine made. This is another benchmark example of this style, with the versatility to be enjoyed all year round as either a 'winter white' or 'summer red'. Either way, this will appeal to the legion of Charles Melton Rosé fans.

"93 Points. Charlie Melton introduced me to the new vintage of ROV on his fabled veranda last month by saying, “If we had a year that we wanted to show people as the archetypal ROV, 2012 would be that year. We would love to make it this way every year, in colour, aromatics and structure. It’s a style all to itself and it doesn’t fit the rosé mould, but we’ve been making it this way for twenty-five years and we love it!” It’s hard to add much, except to say that this bright crimson pink thing is one of the best ROVs to date, and you’ll love it, too! It’s a balancing act of texture with juicy fruit appeal and off-dry sweetness. With accurate notes of pomegranate, raspberry and guava fruit, think of this more as a light red than a rosé - and don’t be afraid to give it a generous chill. $19.50 at Hunt for Wine. Drink: 2012-2013" - Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste Weekly, October 5, 2012.

"Named after "a flaxen-haired beauty" (Charles Melton's wife, Virginia), this magenta-pink Barossa wine is consistently one of Australia's best roses. The new 2012 continues the theme, with juicy red-berry aromas, fragrant floral and rosewater overtones, and a succulent fruity, dryish palate that's light, fresh and lingering. Screw cap; 13 per cent."- Ralph Kyte-Powell, Epicure, The Age, July 17, 2012.

"This is a release for knocking back fast. Really tasty and really more-ish. Sweet strawberries, dried herbs, minerally qualities and flecks of spice. Bright magenta-pink hue. Beautiful colour really. One for the Pantone PMS chart. Not really in the dry, savoury mould – but that has never been Rose of Virginia’s shtick. Just a gorgeously refreshing and attractive drink. Drink: 2012 - 2014"- Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

Charles Melton Wines has produced premium Barossa red wines, always at his winery on Krondorf Road, since 1984. It was in the mid 80's that Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what was considered then a couple of unfashionable varieties; Shiraz and Grenache.
With these varieties, Charlie built a small range of classic dry reds including a Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre blend called the Nine Popes. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhone but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right.

2012 saw the on‐set of a fast‐and‐furious start to vintage, with red grape varieties across the board ripening with good varietalcolour, character and aromatics. To produce a wine that is fresh and retains natural acidity such as the Rose of Virginia, the fruit was picked fresh to reserve its aromatics and mouthfeel.

This light‐to‐medium bodied Rose is fresh, zesty and full of character. A wine with a bright and sexy magenta hue with real vivacity. A beautiful lifted Grenache perfume, with the full spectrum of berry fruits, but also a spicy, and ever so slight grassy herbal note to keep it in the grown up range of flavours. The Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Meunier components provide focus and depth of structure whilst still maintaining crispness and a ‘light on her feet’ mouthfeel.

A number of key techniques were employed by Charles Melton to make an elegant, fresh and aromatic Rose that is the perfect accompainment when entertaining. To retain natural acidity and give zest and crispness on the palate, the grape varieties were picked early in the season. Co‐fermentation of several grape varieties, including Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Meunier and variation in skin contact produced a Rose with vibrancy and elegance.
