Castle Rock Porongurup Riesling 2015

Great Southern, Western Australia   |    750ml   |    12.5%

Top 100 Wines Of 2015 | 96 Points - James Halliday

Castle Rock is situated in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The winery has a reputation for exceptional Riesling that are elegant in their youth with the capability to age beautifully.

"96 Points. You often need to have tasted Castle Rock's Rieslings as they develop over a 5-10-year period to interpret them in their youth. Having said that, this has more varietal fruit (citrus, apple and citrus zest) interwoven with minerally acidity than many of its predecessors. Its aftertaste is extraordinarily persistent. A gold-plated bargain. Drink by: 2035; Price: $26; Date Tasted: Sept 2015; Alcohol: 12.5%" - James Halliday, Top 100 Wines of 2015, The Weekend Australian.

"Lime squeezed in mineral water scents. Ultra vibrant perfume. Touch of florals, some cucumber, tonic water too. Lean and pure to taste with good inward concentration. Limey, powerful in a way, great chalky undertow of acidity. Well tuned riesling here. 92+ Points. Drink 2015-2025. Date tasted: Oct 2015 Price: $25.00 Alcohol:12.5%"- Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.

Named after a prominent nearby landmark, Castle Rock Estate is nestled on the eastern slopes of the Porongurup mountains. Angelo and Wendy Diletti first planted vineyards in 1983, releasing the first vintage riesling in 1986.

The vineyard is situated 40km north east of Albany and 30km south east of Mount Barker, on a cool and elevated northerly aspect. This results in well ripened cool climate varieties producing intensely flavoured wines.

"Colour: Pale straw with green hues.

Bouquet: The nose is dominated by citrus characters, of lime juice and lemons. There are some floral lifted notes, orange blossom and a minerally edge, all of which add interest to the aroma.

Palate: There is a wonderful generosity of fruit and richness on the front palate, thanks to perfectly ripened grapes grown in a cool climate. The lime juice palate is succulent and mouth-watering, the rich fruit flavours are framed by the wonderful natural acidity. The acid core is powerful yet wonderfully balanced and gives the wine a mineral structure and great length. The wine is tight and restrained with an attractive delicacy now, yet will blossom with age for at least ten years.

Excellent ageing potential. It will continue to improve through its first year and then plateau, should drink well for at least 10 years."- Castle Rock Wines.
